Removing PP upgrade when the CPU window opens

Upcoming trip.... used plus points to confirm upgrade at the time of booking but the flights are wide open in F. If I remove plus points now, it should just fall back to CPU, correct? Obviously there is a risk of it not going through

You can only remove a confirmed PP upgrade by canceling your reservation for that flight.

UA does not allow this for this exact reason. This happened when UA converted to PlusPoints from GPU.

Or SDC to another flight and back, if original fare class is available? Big risk from an upgrade standpoint though. Would want to do this right after T-24 hr before the upgrade sweep.

Question for clarification: If you are already confirmed with +P, and you have to cancel, your +P go the way of the dodo, yes?

Only if you used the extra-PlusPoints Skip Waitlist feature, which UA seems disinclined to offer on anything except flights to South America.

My scenario: Used 80pp on a RT (40 ea way) from SFO > CHC. If I need to cancel, I will get the 80PP redeposited? Maybe worth a call... EDIT: I am confirmed in Polaris.

Yes, you will get the PlusPoints back if you need to cancel. The only reason to call would be if they’re not redeposited automatically, which occasionally happens.

So if I am understanding this correctly, if you have a confirmed PP upgrade and find a more suitable date with PZ space open, you can change dates, get a refund of the PP, and reapply them?

I’ve done it several times. When I call, I tread lightly. I ask about it (like a noob) rather than demand. It usually goes well :)

It is standard to return the PlusPoints on a flight cancellation, no reason to tread lightly.

I like being cool to them. They are always happy to help when I am being nice.

There is no reason to be cool or even call at all. Just cxl online and the +Ps will be redeposited. I change my flights all the time and never had a problem.

Date change also result in PP being redeposited?
