PlusPoints NON-Polaris flight upgrade SUCCESS 2022

SFO-DCA
1/13/2022
Y to J
20 points
Cleared at gate.
Booked about 2 weeks ago.
Still awaiting for return to clear.
Seems like upgrades on SOME routes with Covid surge and travel down are getting easier.

My K class LAX-HNL cleared on Jan 12 for flight Jan 18 - purchased 12/5 - although I didn't really need to use PP's with an open cabin but need to use them somehow.

Combination of Covid and the normal after Christmas/New Year's dropoff, I cleared hub-to-hub between ORD and SFO + SFO to IAD without doing a thing, on a K fare I purchased for less than $200 all-in - part of larger itinerary which had included ORD-SFO-IAD.

Just like last year at this time, planes are relatively empty again. Good for stretching out and a lot of poor man's lie-flat seats.

Had to cut my SF trip way short due to some personal matter - just got to SF hours ago Purchased a same-day ticket (thought the fare bucket would be closer to Y, but still W), man, load is way down. half of the 772 J cabin is empty, and everyone on the upgrade list will clear, and there would be still 10+ seats empty.

1. Route: SFO-EWR

2. Date: January 16, 2022
3. Fare Class: W
4. Upgrade: Y-J
5. # of PlusPoints: 20
6. How many days/weeks in advance ticket was purchased: same day
7. How many hours/days/weeks before departure did upgrade clear: less than 30 mins after booking; no PZ but it was still P9 at purchase so good sign. Was #1 on the list after applying PP, and cleared shortly thereafter.

Although this is best for the FAILED thread (mods can move), on the return out of DCA my flight was canceled and I took the Sunday AM flight from IAD to SFO to beat the weather. PP assisted upgrade never cleared on either the canceled flight our of DCA or the flight out of IAD (which was on a Dreamliner so something like 48F seats). I was 6 on the list, moved to 3 then stalled. E and E+ were almost full. I believe I was not the only one trying to get back west prior to the storms hitting the east.

SFO-CLE
1/26/2022
E+ to J/business
20 PPs
Purchased approx just shy of one month ago.
Just cleared 1/22/2022 9:30pst.

This was the replacement ticket for the redeye (Wed nite 1/25) that I had confirmed upgrade at booking and was subsequently canceled. Happy to get even a 4 day advance on the upgrade as most of mine have previously cleared at the gate. Still awaiting upgrade on return.

Flying this route in a few weeks. Not looking forward to the red-eye 737. I have decided against using PP, and will decline CPU to form my lieflat in the back, hopefully. Main cabin looks rather empty right now (hope that would stay). Domestic F recliners upfront all unoccupied.

EWR-SFO
Feb 3, 2021
Fare class: was K (economy), but was allowed to switch for free to A (premium economy)
Y>J (then PE>J)
Was 20PP, now 10PP
Booked in January sometimes
Cleared shortly after T-24
I had no shot on my original flight 787-10 with 44 seats and 40 seat taken about 2 days out. Due to weather waiver, I was able to switch to a 772 with more capacity upfront. And I would be able to get to SF earlier as a bonus.

This is my 15th upgrade using PP in the last 13th months - all economy fare buckets like G or K; some I was able to 2 transcon flights (e.g. EWR to SFO and turn back within 4 hours) for only 20PP total.
