Have 789s been getting retrofitted with the performance package that enables them to operate ULH routes like EWR-JNB? I believe this package came installed on 2020 and later deliveries (frames 3975 and up), but lately I've been seeing various earlier build frames operate EWR-JNB.

My understanding is no. EWR-JNB doesn't need the PIP upgrade. That route is about 500 miles less than SFO-SIN. Delhi needs it and maybe one other destination but I cant remember it off the top of my head.

I thought the PIP mostly boosted takeoff performance at JNB's high altitude (especially during the present southern hemisphere summer), not range.

Yup, I think you are right. Possible light loads maybe dont require it?

I believe the PIP work on the older frames was intended to be carried out during Polaris mods. No structural changes or major engine mods, just some flight management software updates, a FADEC "plug" and paperwork revisions.

Out of JNB, the advantage is the ability to haul some more weight westbound, especially during the (current) summer months. That additional payload can be turned into more fuel, cargo, pax, bags or some optimal combination of the foregoing.

N27957 was scheduled to fly XMN-NRT tomorrow 3/12 as UA2762, but has been canceled. Of the remaining 6 birds, no obvious upcoming candidates for mod as there's nothing cycling through NRT at least through Sunday.

I noticed that as well. Should be another one right after that as well. 787s are in the homestretch!
