Wouldn't there have to be an inbound that day so the crew could do a same-day turn to avoid a layover and risk Covid testing/quarantine?

There would, I don't see which plane it will be but by tomorrow it will most likely become clear.

My guess is N35953, which has been flying transcons, probably waiting for a mod slot at XMN.

XMN activity:
738 GUM unit N37281 sked to enter XMN2740/18Apr, assume maint?
772PW N772UA sked to enter XMN 2710/18Apr, interesting that this unit was recently in XMN for heavy maint
789 N24974 sked to exit XMN 2743/18Apr with Polaris/PP
I don't see any of the 4 remaining 789 non-Polaris units heading to XMN - 2 units seem to be flying Transons, one on ORD DEL and one on GRU at the moment.

953 flying SFO-IAD-SFO and 958 flying SFO-EWR-SFO; both getting into SFO after 8PM Sunday. Either could be poised to jump to NRT, although it would look like the ferry crew from XMN would have a bit of a wait.

I almost think the crew is going to XMN on the 777 then both crews leave on the 789. Maybe the mods will slow a bit with the delayed return of the PW 777s..

Not showing XMN yet, but getting closer: N35953 is now showing SFO-NRT on 18 April, arriving NRT on 19 April, so too late to be ferrying N24974 back. I like IAHMCI's idea in post 160 of the 789 crew ferrying in with the 777 N772UA.
https://flightaware.com/live/flight/...850Z/KSFO/RJAA

Which raises the question of if N35953 is going to XMN then how is the crew getting back?

N35953 is shown as turning in NRT and the completed unit N24974 is to ferry to ORD from NRT. So, it looks like the 3rd mod line may not be filled right now.
