What happens if the delay/cancellation is due to a COVID staffing issue? Is United required to provide compensation in this situation or is it more like if the problem is due to something beyond their control such as weather?

Im pretty sure a pandemic w/ quarantine guidelines and illnesses are not UA’s fault. Expecting compensation is a bit unrealistic.

Just one data point to add: I received a text a little bit ago that my flight for Saturday, January 1 is canceled. It was paid C on a MAX 8. The auto-rebook put me in Y on a later flight, but I was able to rebook in C on the earlier 739 flight with ease on-line.

UA921 LHR-EWR last night - plane sat for ten or more minutes waiting for marshalers to get onto the gate; then we waited over an hour for the first bags - announcement was "we have one ramp crew working four flights so please expect delays in getting your bags".

When are flights getting cancelled?

Any data points on up until how late flights are getting cancelled right now? We have a LAX-DEN flight tomorrow, which is still fine. Today there are 2/10 cancelled already. The little I’ve read has made it seem like flights are getting proactively cancelled a day or more in advance.

The flights I've noticed have been cancelled the evening before. Fortunately none of mine so far, only ones I have thought about SDC-ing to.

My flight tomorrow EWR > TPA at 2:20 was cancelled and I was put on the 4:40. Went from a paid upgrade on the earlier flight to 14A on the new flight. I know this happens, but it still hurts.

My SAN-LAX flight (UA5854) tomorrow morning was just cancelled because of severe weather conditions for my destination.

Looks like UA5793 is still flying later tomorrow morning if you can switch to it and meets your travel needs.

There’s a delay explanation you don’t see often. Put down a good longshot bet when you get to Vegas!

UA has announced that they are cancelling 193 mainline flights today (9%) due to weather and "staffing issues." AA has cancelled four.
