Interesting how different people perceive the same image; to me it looks like a yin-yang symbol combined with an interpretation of a character from an Asian language (Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, etc.) which is why my original gut guesses were so far off. That said, while all of my suspicions have been ruled out I don't have new guesses to replace them. I have learned from Google Images that a frightening number of airports use the same very dull carpet

EWR. I plugged into it this morning - or an adjoining one. Someone ought to tote a Cat5 cable to see if it still works. Do laptops have Cat5 ports anymore? It's an honest question - I'm always connecting via Wifi and haven't looked for a cable connection on it.

There are little adapter cables available that use USB port to still allow connection to LAN if you need it.

i'm not sure you can get a Cat-5 cable anymore (i think cat 5e is the minimum). Cat 6 and 6a it generally much faster and stable than an encrypted wi-fi connection with today's high-speed gigabit connections, but it depends on your router/switch setup. Cat 7/8 is also available but more expensive. many of the laptops i've seen run the lan connections through the USB-C/thunderbolt port/hub. Some have a lan port.
