Guess these are the first round of hits with the drop of UX planes due to pilot shortage.

wonder what’s next.

Okay, found this; supposed to start in March 2022:
(AVP went from AVP-EWR to AVP-IAD recently, and now back to AVP-EWR...)

United is suspending service from IAD to the following cities:
  • Akron/Canton, Ohio (CAK) (service continues from ORD)
  • Asheville, North Carolina (AVL) (service continues from EWR)
  • Bangor, Maine (BGR) (service continues from EWR)
  • Erie, Pennsylvania (ERI) (service continues from ORD)
  • Grand Rapids, Michigan (GRR) (service continues from EWR)
  • Greensboro, North Carolina (GSO) (service continues from EWR)
  • Greenville/Spartanburg, South Carolina (GSP) (service continues from EWR)
  • Milwaukee (MKE) (service continues from EWR)
  • Wilmington, North Carolina (ILM) (service continues from EWR)
United is shifting the following service from IAD to EWR:
  • Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (MDT)
  • Ithaca, New York (ITH)
  • Philadelphia (PHL)
  • Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania (AVP)
  • State College, Pennsylvania (SCE)

Ithaca's in the same boat as AVP. I knew many folks (myself included) who were thrilled when it shifted to IAD in 2019 because of the nonstop DC connection. But I guess first-class seating options are the antidote for the return of chronically-delayed flights.

Shift of IAD-PHL to EWR-PHL is an interesting move. Other shifts are “back to the past” moves. Perhaps, BWI-EWR will return, too.

Having just moved to BWI, I would love a return of the BWI-EWR connection, especially in the morning to connect to more transcon options. That said, I would never trust a mid-afternoon BWI-EWR to connect with the Europe bank.

There are a few European flights from EWR that are not available from IAD, most of which are leisure routes (e.g., EWR-LIS, EWR-MAD, EWR-VCE, EWR-NCE).
The best thing that you can help yourself is to request for BWI-EWR twice daily service on all United surveys after your trips.

I was curious about that too. I suppose with the demise of the UA Amtrak relationship they were loosing out on a lot of travelers?

As a mostly PHL based UA flyer, I am not at all happy about this change, as I'd much rather transit at IAD with the great lounge options (LH, TK).
The PHL-EWR was a Continental route prior to the merger.

Maybe the Amtrak-United partnership having ended had something to do with that decision? Interesting though, aye.

EWR has more (and better, to LAX and SFO) domestic and international flight options than IAD. PHL-EWR is a good move, but I do wish that IAD-PHL is kept.

I wonder what temporary means here. I find it care to believe they’re permanently shutting off some of these IAD markets altogether since they handle East/southeast connections (specifically looking at the Carolina cities). Otherwise, it’s giving up that business to AA and DL. Does anyone know how long the regional jet pilot shortage is expected to last?

Wonder what this does for the planned new concourse/annex to the C/D concourse intended for RJs. I could see it either being put on ice or that this suspension will continue until that's completed.

I would rather for UA to reinstate the relationship with Amtrak. This route needs connecting passengers, as it makes no sense to fly O/D when the train ride is faster and significantly cheaper ($18 each way).

Supposedly, this is mainly Air Wisconsin staffing shortages. The plan is to reinstate these routes in 2023, but who knows how this will shake out.
