They eliminated the BOS/LHR route even though it was routinely full. It was an excellent alternative when EWR can be a mess. They are eliminating premium seats on BOS/SFO and BOS/LAX. Just had to fly SFO/BOS last week with less than 24 hours notice (funeral); the only empty seats were the ones United needs to leave empty 'cause of weight restrictions! Barely got 2 seats together.

Even at 4 to 5 flights a day, BOS/SFO has very high demand. BOS/LAX with 2 flights a day isn't far behind.

Sad state in Boston for UA customers.
I have never heard of open seats due to weight, in either direction on this route. Especially doesn't make sense coming from west coast.

UA to SFO still has the best timing for TPAC connections, although I am skipping more and more of them using CX, KE, JL direct options.

Of course not. IIRC, AA had exited this route back in 2010

My booked RT in June is still showing 752s both directions.

Looking to book another RT in July/August. All 752s on the dates I'm examining.

I'm aware that the plural of anecdote isn't data.

It's very hard to get upgraded on BOS-SFO/LAX unless you are GS.

UA has eliminated the 6am flight BOS-SFO on some dates, this makes it impossible to connect to Shanghai unless you stay overnight at SFO.

I am not happy.

GS not even a guarantee. Last time I flew SFO-BOS, I sat in the front row of coach next to a GS who died at #1 on the list having applied +P. I was #7 as a 1K having applied +P.

This is a common route for me and not wanting to do the IAD shuffle I am indeed now looking into B6 Mint when possible. When PS dropped on this route years back I thought well maybe good news as a GS/1K back then I would now get a possible upgrade. That ended up being a total pipe dream.... I am now fully into the "want first buy first" camp.

It is a route where I used to book and pay for J - no longer. UAs loss.

That sucks. I have flown BOS-SFO-PEK a bunch of times, it's a tight but doable connection (10am departure if I recall correctly prior to Covid) - a few times the Beijing flight had started boarding when the Boston flight has arrived. I have even asked my mom to fly with me once, and we are both ex-NYC. Huge savings.

Assume PVG has similar timing now.

In the schedule and sample bookings, I only see a few 737s on SFO-BOS/vv between Dec 16 and Jan 8, maybe 30-40 flights in total, and not into the spring. Quite the reaction here for such a modest adjustment, maybe 50% of flights over a 1 month period.

Maybe OP can post their spring examples.

Its been almost a 0% chance of success for me even as a GS in 2023. I have pretty much given up on an upgrade on this flight, so its either find a day/time where I can justify the J price (usually the 6am), or I go via EWR/IAD where I've had better upgrade chances.

Getting rid of the 6am BOS-SFO and the 10/11pm BOS-LHR flights both are huge disappointments for me

I am not happy.
Chiming in on what is my weekly route:
- I'm not happy either on the 6 am elimination/back on/off depending on which day. Huge inconvenience-IIRC, United always drops flights in the winter, and pulls back on redeyes too, hopefully the 6am change isn't permanent.
- These flights are routinely packed and agree upgrades are rare/if not impossible, and GS doesn't mean diddly on these flights, including redeye back. If you want first, buy up. If I wait til a few days before, middle seat economy is a lucky score, if any seats at all.
- Have been flying JetBlue last few weeks out of desperation and darn their first class product is great.
- United/JetBlue are only lie flats left, and the IAH/EWR stopovers used to be attractive alternative. Thus, we're now seeing round trip business up to 3-4K.

I see it starting 3/31/24. All flights loaded as operated by a 737 Max 9

Previous GS/1K and now Plat and I have been on this route for years and I couldn't agree more that upgrades are as rare as hen's teeth for sure. As I posted above with my current UA status and am fully in the "want F buy F" group. I do have my collection of favorite E+, aisle, and "hobo first" seats that I will occasionally grab when F is unobtainable/unaffordable. I am now always pricing out B6 Mint as an option.
