United plans to add AVOD to some older narrowbody planes

Hot off the press.. no mention if this is just about the LiveTV subfleet or anything beyond that.

More here, from The Wandering Aramean. I quote:

In a message to employees on Thursday Chief Customer Officer Toby Enqvist indicated that an interior retrofit is on the way for “our older narrow-body airplanes, putting in new bins, AVOD, and new seats.”

Does AVOD just mean streaming to personal devices, or are they going to put seatback screens in the newer narrowbodies too?

If it is F, I can make sense of that - Economy, that makes no sense. The seatback entertainment, especially the stuff I see go in E gets dated quickly.

Good news - hopefully USB port as well as a touchscreen (something like what’s in the 789) would be a plus point in Y

My guess is they're going to turn those screens into app-running machines. Start the "United" app to order food and drinks and pay for them right at your seat before they are delivered to you.

Finally. If they bring back in-seat IFE, I may get back to United.

I have no idea who thought that holding a small phone to watch movies for several hours of a flight would be a good idea.

This is great news. My B6 Domestic Florida travel might now shift to UA....

I read on another site the intention is screens, full AVOD, and some live TV (DTV or other).👍

Like the idea above of a USB port as well, but not mentioned in post. Hopefully so.

Yes, OP could have linked to me who broke the story. "AVOD" will be installed on select narrow body fleet. We don't have confirmation yet on how many and to what extent this will be done. All we have this:

That's a the link to a video UA released to its employees.

Note that when Enqvist talks about AVOD, seats with screens are showed (therefore, the implication is not that this is simply streaming service).

Which makes it more confusing why they're installing it in old NB and not new NB.

Unless the delivered MAX are now "older".

The bean counters that measured the additional ounces those screens weighed and subsequent fuel consumption.

Curious if they are considering other interior upgrades aside from the TVs. Some of the older 737s are getting pretty old with outdated overhead bins/fluorescent lighting etc.

Feels like you're stepping back into the 90's on some of these birds.
