UA's response to Easter (4 April) / Spring Break 2021 leisure travel

Was booked to fly SAN-EWR on the direct flight on April 3rd and noticed it was changed to a connecting flight. UA602 is now off the schedule on 4/3 and is running on every other day. Just curious if there is any reason and if it will return.

Low demand on a Saturday?

Maybe. The flight wasn't completely empty though, and other Saturdays survived.

A bunch of (full/near-full) Easter weekend flights were cut from the schedule and consolidated with other frequencies, leading to a lot of overbooked flights, unwanted connections and limited availability.

An unfavorable consequence of United's policy of close-in major schedule adjustments, as people are beginning to cautiously return to the skies. After dealing with this on two separate occasions today, the common response was, "one year later, same old United ****!"

There have been some similiar reports of being bumped off flights -- see UA message

Self-serve option for April schedule change error

In the course of loading our April schedule, an error caused select PNRs to be re-accommodated incorrectly.

Our teams are working to fix impacted records, but in the meantime, you have a self-serve option if you’d like to take action.

  • For PNRs re-accommodated onto misconnecting or inconvenient (such as very long layover) connecting flights, please re-book the customer onto a valid or more convenient connecting flight.
  • If the schedule change resulted in a ‘no-protect’ status for a segment (no re-accommodation provided), we may not have yet cancelled the downline or upline connecting flights. We’re working to automatically fix records that do not include protection for the cancelled flights, but you can self-serve by rebooking the customers onto their preferred option or cancel the connecting flights as needed.

To help you identify PNRs impacted by this issue, we’re appending the following SSR OTHS messages:
  • SKEDCHG ERROR-PLS PROTECT PAX ONTO ALT FLT
  • ADMS WILL NOT APPLY-ADD UASKEDCHG WAIVER IN OSI
  • AGY PLS SEE JETSTREAM FOR MORE DETAILS
Additionally, when adding space back into the record or adjusting a misconnecting flight, please add the schedule change waiver code (OSI UA UASKEDCHG). Please follow our normal schedule change rules, available here.

We will carefully monitor these transactions to ensure debit memos are not issued if changes are made within the boundaries of the waiver rules. You do not need to contact our Customer Contact Centers for review or approval.

We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we work diligently to resolve the issue.
David

Yeah, even in the past UA has bumped folks off flights with schedule changes. In my case last year as a 1K on paid p.s. business ticket ... went 28J to 16J ... no other change, same flight number, same flight times. UA bumped me out of 1A and onto a connection via ORD.
I was majorly annoyed to say the least ... not even an apology from UA and I had to fight to get an EWR connection instead

What's happening in Chicago weekend of 4/3?

I was poking around EF and noticed that almost all SFO/LAX to ORD flights on Saturday 4/3 and Sunday 4/4 are completely sold out. There are 11 LAX-ORD flights across both days (including a "bonus" 7:15am Saturday flight to complement the usual 7:00am), and every single one of them is J0 Y0. Similarly, there are 12 SFO-ORD flights across both days, and 11 of them are J0 Y0 whereas one (the Sunday redeye 788) is solidly booked at J9 Y8. Flights the following weekend look more normal, with Y9s across the board.

Glancing at the seatmaps, Y seatmaps (including E+) are very fully assigned already, whereas F seatmaps vary from fully assigned on some flights to sparsely assigned on others (5 out of 16 assigned on one random 738). Is there something special happening in Chicago that weekend, or what?

Leisure demand is approaching 100% in a lot of markets, but capacity is still way down.

And the 777-200 PW grounding complicated matters. Some flights are overbooked by over 80 right now. Expect extra segments to be added in the next week, if for nothing else than to accommodate the massive oversells.

Indeed, UA just added a new LAX-ORD segment on 04/03 - check it out. UA636 at 07:15AM. Wide-open now with Basic Economy tickets $40 and Economy at $70.

This seems to be making for several unusual scheduling choices.

Here's IAH-DEN for 3-Apr, midmorning:
Check out that frequency!

thanks for posting this because it prompted me to check SFO-ORD. They added a new 752 section at 8:30am. Even has PZ!
