UA orders 25 additional 737 MAX

Couldn't decide on adding to the MAX return thread, or starting a new one, because this seems news worrthy on its own.

But apparently UA believes in the MAX fix, as they just ordered another 25 as well as accelerated deliveries of 40 frames.

Why wouldn't they? Likely the most tested airplane in history and now safest - need to swap out the fuel inefficient planes for the efficient ones.

The bigger surprise to me is the confidence United has in the recovery of the travel market, not United's confidence in Max

To be fair - it isn't like these planes are arriving soon and is in line when travel should be picking back up

"In addition to the 25 Boeing 737 Max planes that are slated for delivery in 2023, the Chicago-based airline said it moved up the delivery of 40 other Max jets to 2022 and five others to 2023."

I'm sure Boeing gave them a great deal on them - a big customer puts in a modest order at a time like this, will give them a big boost, regardless of the economics of the deal.

Perhaps they'll be using these as PS aircraft as they replace the entire 757 fleet with these domestically, and the 321xlr for international, or will they just can those? Its almost 200 aircraft so I guess they'll be dumping some older 738/9 to make room?

Decked out right, these could be decent replacements for our beloved 757's... It's quickly become clear that the 757's aren't long for this world. Won't have the rocketship-like takeoff, but certainly workable.

I'm looking forward to seeing a Polarisized 737MAX. The cabin width is identical to the 757 so we know lie flats are certainly very doable.

Wish we could have 747's on every route but that's just not economical. If they can fly some MAX's with Polaris seats, that's a perfectly fine ride transcon for me.

Not clear if these new orders are -8,-9 or -10s? Believe it is just the -10s in line for the the premium transcon service
Speculated 737-10 / MAX10 lie flat seat plan

From what I've seen, no announcement has been made as to the breakdown of the MAX orders with regard to 737-7, 737-8, 737-9, and 737-10. How these new, and accelerated delivery, aircraft will be used will depend on which model they will be.

I think the plan was for the 737-10 to take the premium transcon service. The 737-7 would be for the long, thin routes like those the 737-700 now fills with it's greater range as well as service to smaller cities. I've flown ORD-ANC in the 737-800. That, and similar, routes could certainly benefit from the lower fuel burn of the 737-8.

These 25 orders were announced as growth aircraft but, to the extent that they could be used as replacements, the 737-700s are the oldest and the 737-900 (the first 12 non-ER models) are the least capable of the 737-900/900ER fleet.

Just throwing this out there because of the numbers correlation: But this takes UA's position on the 737Max (I think its a combo of 9 &10's) to about 225 frames. Isn't that about the same number of frames they have in the 319/320's?

I haven't been keeping track, has the -10 had its first flight yet? What's the current projection for availability?

I'm guessing they will stop/curtail buying used aircraft due to this.

Boeing has said the -10 will not be going into service before 2023.

As this thread is about a fleet addition and impacts on the overall UA fleet for the future, it probably makes sense as a separate thread
BUT let's keep the discussion about the MAX's history and people concerns with the MAX in the other thread B737MAX [Cleared by FAA to resume passenger flights];When will UA MAX flights resume? -- there is no reason for another thread to go over that territory
