2 year old refuses to wear mask, family kicked off flight

United kicked them off the flight and then sent their bags and car seat to the final destination.

Absolutely insane. Anyone who tries to defend this policy for a 2yo is delusional.

You can be sure that there is much more to this than a FA giving the family the Heave Ho over a temper tantrum over a mask. Where would you draw the line? Two and a half, Three, 18?

Doing a simple search on Google reveals a couple of cases like this a couple of months ago. Was this recent? Did you witness it yourself?

Did you watch the video? It is pretty clear they tried to get the 2yo to wear the mask for a while. And this wasn’t by any stretch a badly behaved 2yo.

Asking a toddler to sit on a possibly 5 hour plane ride with a mask on is ridiculous. Not a single person commenting on the Instagram post is defending United because it IS ridiculous. The mother claims in her Insta post that the WHO recommends AGAINST wearing masks for kids under 5. If that’s true, let’s say kids under 5 shouldn’t have to wear masks!!! Much more reasonable than 2yo.

The OP link was automatically created by FT and is not correct.

Looks a bit like someone trying to pick a fight with United.

Kids tend to learn behaviours from somewhere.

The mask policy applies to everyone two and over, and I appreciate that United will enforce it.

Maybe they could have practiced it at home? Was it the first time the kid was asked to wear a mask? What do other families do in situations like these?

Applies to everyone 2 and over. That is a key distinction in this context.

I appreciate UA's enforcement of this policy. While they're not blocking seats, they have highest onboard mask compliance of any carrier I've flown.

I have a serious question for all of you, which do you think is more dangerous:

1> A 2yo without a mask on, sitting in between her 2 parents with a hard object in front of her and behind her.

2> 3 adults from different households sitting shoulder to shoulder in coach with masks off eating and drinking, with maybe one of them drinking alcohol. Oh and maybe having a conversation with each other.

And then they escort the little girl off the plane without a mask on, past rows and rows of passengers. They would have been better off letting her stay in the seat for the flight and deplane with the usual Covid deplaning procedures.

IMHO the only thing I think would be reasonable for United to do in this situation is require the little girl to wear a mask when entering and deplaning the aircraft.

Here is the WHO advisory that children under 5 shouldn’t be required to wear masks. This girl was 2 years old!

Thanks, indeed, that is what I was attempting to say. (Missed a crucial word!)

They should have had a cute child mask for their daughter, in pink and with her favorite cartoon character. The adult surgical mask was obviously too big to be effective and maybe looked scary, but this is on the parents. Parents need to model mask wearing and practice with the kid at home.

BTW, the daughter looks older than two in that video. They say she's turning three in March IIRC.

She also wasn't sitting in her seat with seat belt fastened but crawling all over her father. This is also a safely issue for other passengers as well as the child.

Here's the rule from the UA website:
"Requiring all customers over the age of 2 and employees to wear a face covering on board."
Seems clear to me.

The airline agent that removed them from the flight safety d at the end he agrees it’s stupid. It wasn’t about anything more than their company policy.. ridiculous.. a 2 year old.

Read further on the page you cite:

Are there situations where children aged 5 years and under may wear or be required to wear a mask?In general, children aged 5 years and under should not be required to wear masks. This advice is based on the safety and overall interest of the child and the capacity to appropriately use a mask with minimal assistance. There may be local requirements for children aged 5 years and under to wear masks, or specific needs in some settings, such as being physically close to someone who is ill. In these circumstances, if the child wears a mask, a parent or other guardian should be within direct line of sight to supervise the safe use of the mask.
Also kind of ironic to cite the WHO rules on mask use, yet ignore all the other authorities on non-essential travel.

But on the plus side, the family can dump UA and fly on AA. Oh, wait.... https://abcnews.go.com/ABCNews/mothe...d%20ABC%20News.

But on the plus side they can dump UA and AA and fly B6. Oh, wait.... https://6abc.com/travel/family-kicke...fusal/6380918/

But on the plus side they can dump UA, AA and B6 and fly WN. Oh, wait..... https://abc7news.com/coroanvirus-new...id-19/6422644/

I guess they can give DL or AS a shot.
