UA will reduce seats on E175 from 76 to 70 to comply with clause in pilots' contract
Any word on how many 175s will have seats removed to allow compliance with the pilot contract post-COVID?

if UAL furloughs past the required hire date per the contract, there will not be any 76 seaters flying. |

Maybe United should just have their pilots fly them instead express pilots?

If UA furloughs any pilot on staff on the date the contract was signed, all 76-seat aircraft revert to 70-seat aircraft (but are still considered as 76-seaters for purposes of scope numbers). To trigger this clause, it is approximately 2300 pilots being furloughed. Current estimates are well beyond this number. The new seatmap for these 70-seaters is now posted on UA.com. 6 seats are removed from the back (with no other changes, and no spacing out of the remaining rows). That type of change can probably be completed in a matter of hours. None of the 153 76-seaters have been converted as of today, but the change will likely begin very soon. These aircraft can all be returned to 76 seats on the day that triggering pilot is recalled from furlough. |
The way the contract is written, there is some room for interpretation of the "convert" and "for operation as" language... conventional wisdom seems to be that the company will take seats off of the airplanes (indeed that was suggested by Nocella in an investor presentation earlier in the year) but one certainly can argue that the language doesn't preclude something short of that, such as inactivation of those six seats, or withholding from sale.
A few weeks ago, with the "enhanced" early out program, I think the company was hopeful it might be able to attract enough takers (in the 60+ age range), plus voluntary leaves, to avoid furloughing beyond post-JCBA hires, but as the industry outlook has deteriorated by the day, I don't anticipate UA will be able to avoid such a deep furlough, at least initially. 1-C-1-h Effect of Furlough If a Pilot on the Seniority List with an employment date prior to the date of signing of this Agreement is placed on furlough, the Company shall convert all 76-Seat Aircraft for operation as 70-Seat Aircraft. The number of such aircraft shall continue to be limited as though they were being operated as 76-Seat Aircraft. The Company may again commence operating such Aircraft as 76-Seat Aircraft effective on the date that the most junior Pilot protected by the first sentence of this Section 1-C-1-h is recalled from furlough. |

175 /Hepa
Best thread I could find re 175’s
Can anyone confirm if UAX 175’s have HEPA filters? I know the smaller regionals don’t have them. Can’t find anything on the web. Thanks! |
Apparently E-Jets (170 and above) do have HEPA:

The portion of the air that is recirculated passes through the HEPA filters.
The fresh air entering the cabin is; 1. outside air, where there aren't any people, and .2. is heated to up to 250°C by the compression before being cooled The fresh and recirculated air is mixed before it enters the cabin. The ratio of fresh/recirculated varies by aircraft type. I don't know where you can find the specific ratios but they all favor fresh over recirculated. This should produce significantly better air quality than any building ventilation system. |

So, it looks like the number of F seats and F/Y pitch won't increase. I guess it make the overhead bin situation better - especially the 12/32/26 configuration where they are adding a closet?
Did they just forget to draw that in the 12/16/42 configuration? If the pitch does not change and 1.5 rows are removed (most likely in the back), wouldn't they put a closet? |
