Aug 12, 2020: new seasonal FL service -- BOS, CLE, LGA, CMH, IND, MKE & PIT

UA Twitter is teasing that some new route announcements could be made around 3:15pm CDT today, August 12. One of their subsequent replies indicates that these routes are entirely domestic. Any guesses in the next 45 minutes?!

CHICAGO, Aug. 12, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- United Airlines today announced plans to add up to 28 daily nonstop flights this winter connecting customers in Boston, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, New York/LaGuardia, Pittsburgh and Columbus, Ohio to four popular Florida destinations. The new, nonstop flights reflect United's continuing strategy to aggressively, and opportunistically manage the impact of COVID-19 by increasing service to destinations where customers most want to fly.

The airline will incrementally add in these flights starting November 6 with new roundtrip service from Boston, Cleveland and New York/LaGuardia to Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Orlando and Tampa. In December, the airline will increase service to Florida with additional flights from Columbus, Ohio; Indianapolis; Milwaukee and Pittsburgh to Fort Myers and Tampa. Tickets are now available for purchase on united.com and the United mobile app.

"The addition of these new flights represents United's largest expansion of point-to-point, non-hub flying and reflects our data driven approach to add capacity where customers are telling us they want to go," said Ankit Gupta, United's vice president of Domestic Network Planning. "We look forward to offering customers in the Midwest and Northeast more options to fly nonstop to Florida this winter."

From Nov. 6, 2020 through January 10, 2021, United will operate nonstop service from Boston, Cleveland and New York/LaGuardia to Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Orlando and Tampa on peak days.

Full schedule here.

Smart move. The network people at UA have been smart lately.

The network people abandons the network and choose the point-to-point model of Southwest and other LLCs. lol.

A welcome addition even if they aren't places I would necessarily want to travel to in the winter. Now they just need to get a UC here already (I won't hold my breath on that one)

Interesting, but it remains to be seen if anyone wants to fly to Florida next winter - it's not exactly the safest place to be right now.

What is more interesting is the possible transition to more of a point to point flight business model to through capacity where its needed and pull it from network routes where it's not. This would, in my opinion, result in a much smaller operation able to dynamically allocate capacity.

Not necessarily new routes ex-CLE but resumption of non-stop service. MCO was year round and FLL, RSW & TPA seasonal before pandemic.

Interesting to see BOS, IND, PIT, MKE, and LGA additions. BOS used to be able to connect through hubs or CLE for FL service until CLE-BOS ended. Here’s hoping they last and COVID19 doesn’t stop the flights even before they take off!

The “network“ is geared for business travel, which isn’t happening for the foreseeable future. So, either fly somewhere, or just park the planes. An innovative approach for this airline that will hopefully allow cash burn management for this fall/winter while we await the crisis to resolve...

So excited about this expansion into LGA. I hope it’s maintained into February ( when the virus has hopefully further subsided + Baseball spring training).

The creativity when the concept of Spoke to Spoke is accepted can be amazing!

While prices are rather low, loads are very respectable to Florida out of LaGuardia across the board, and have been since early June.

Ridiculous. We're never going to get rid of corona when vultures like United prioritize a dollar over public health.

Flights to Florida should be banned, not encouraged

Creative thinking but feels a bit like desperation. I also think that it is not a great signal to be starting routes to one of the country’s hot spots.

That said, if UA wants to advocate for flying to warmer weather vacation spots in the winter, I would hope that they can figure out a way to increase service to California, specifically LAX, SNA and SAN (can throw in ONT and BUR, too).

Interesting, but that’s about it. UA has never had much of a footprint in FL with the exception of the short lived Miami experiment inherited from Pan Am.

On routes like BOS/LGA-MCO, I’m curious what kind of reason UA would give me to choose them over DL in F or B6 in Y. Maybe they’ll be cheaper, but I kind of doubt it.

This has some nice potential if it's still in place in November 2021 when we need to fly from Florida to Vancouver. This could really expand the options.

What kind of routing do you have in mind?
