Safety updates to inflight dining
Your safety and the safety of our employees is our highest priority. To try and further limit potential exposure to coronavirus (COVID-19) on board, we’re temporarily adjusting our inflight service as of March 29 and will be moving to primarily pre-packaged foods and sealed beverages. Preorder meals and food for purchase will not be available. We’re also unable to offer special meals except for Kosher meals on flights to and from Tel Aviv.
Beverage changes for all flights
We will be offering sealed beverages on all flights. If you’re on a flight under 1 hour, you’ll receive beverages on request. We’ll also offer coffee and tea on domestic flights departing before 9:45 a.m. and on all international and premium transcontinental flights. Non-alcoholic beverages are complimentary, and alcoholic beverages are complimentary in premium cabins. Wine and beer are also complimentary in United Economy® on long-haul international flights.

We won't have snacks available in United Economy for flights under 2 hours and 20 minutes or in United First® for flights under 1 hour. As always, you're welcome to bring snacks on board. For flights between 1 hour and 2 hours and 20 minutes in United First, you'll receive an "all-in-one" snack bag with a wrapped sanitizer wipe, 8.5-ounce bottled water and two snacks.
For flights 2 hours and 20 minutes or longer, you'll receive an "all-in-one" snack bag with a wrapped sanitizer wipe, 8.5-ounce bottled water and two snacks in United Economy. In the premium cabin, you'll be offered a snack box.

American is bringing back a modified meal service to domestic F flights over 900 miles starting August 26. What will United do? Has it magically become safe to serve real food again?

Had an interesting service onboard today. First Class was actually allowed to board after 1K's like the good old days. No PDB, because clearly COVID only exists while drinking on the ground and not while drinking in the air. Small Dasani bottles of ice-cold water were passed out prior to departure.
Once in the air, snack basket service, consisting of a choice of pretzels, gummy bears, sea salt & pepper chips and maybe one other thing were on offer. I guess this flight is under the threshold for snack box service in F, so I'd say this is an improvement over the pre-selected bags I've gotten used to as of late.
Drinks and re-fills offered.
Very nostalgic flying on these old PMUA F/J seats. Tolerable for a short flight, but wouldn't want to cross an ocean in these relative to the competition.

I hate shameless cost-cutting when times are good, and still dislike it now, but at least there is the economic justification for it. Airlines are losing money like never before, and it's only going to get worse before it gets better. There's no business travel at all, therefore the economic justification for most premium services at mainline carriers is gone. Demand, loads and yields are completely in the toilet.
It's just tilting at windmills, now. I'm glad to have thoroughly enjoyed the most recent era of airline "boom times". They are gone for a while.

If the differentiated product doesn’t command sufficient value, competition can be a valid reason to offer.
Said differently, there are not a meaningful amount of customers traveling right now that will pay more for a better product.

I don't know about you, but I was in F on transcons over the past weeks and all I got was boxes of not good instead of getting served and fed.
Crap service is crap service.
