How much of your money does UA hold right now?

For schedule changes/cancellations >6 hours on wholly DOMESTIC US itineraries, UA should be refunding (look under Schedule Change table).
https://jetstream.united.com/#/sub-l...6000006V2voEAC

For schedule changes/cancellations >6 hours on involving international itineraries, UA is providing credit. However, if flight departs EU on schedule changes/cancellations >5 hours, they are going against EC261/2004 if not refunding.
Notice of Passenger RIghts provided under EC261/2004 is linked on UA page.

About $2k. Would have been $5k, but found upgradeable PE seats (into Polaris) for a Christmas market trip to Europe in November. Was agonizing whether to burn the 120 PlusPoints for the upgrades for both of us, but now I am glad I did as just got a slew of PP refunded due to canceled travel in Mar/Apr. Crazy year for everything, including travel!

LAX
When Independence Air stopped doing business (not sure if it was a BK) I got a check in the mail for what was previously a flight credit.

I'm a business owner. UA holds a little less than $20k in business travel, and around $3K+ in personal. I'd feel better if UA had been customer service focused in any fashion prior to this pandemic.

Not really “my money” but a $1,500 ETC (compensation from a downgrade from Prem to Economy Plus). Valid through Feb 2021.

The OP had added unflown tickets as a criteria, leading to some potential misleading numbers. I was holding something like 20 tickets/reservations at the end of last year for 2020. Yes, the airline is holding those funds, but they are also obligated to transport you to the destination(s) on the reservation; whereas ETCs, travel bank are funds not set aside for any purpose yet.
I agree it should only include flights cancelled not tickets with active reservations.

In a bankruptcy, it would depend on what the bankruptcy court ordered.

Previous airline bankruptcies would not be much of a guidepost, because they involved much smaller airlines than the modern United, and because usually an airline heading towards bankruptcy suffers a dropoff in business as consumers shy away from it. In contrast, a coronavirus bankruptcy would involve a going, formerly profitable airline with untold amounts of unsecured liabilities to ticketholders.

Believe me, all of us should be very glad the airlines are getting bailed out. It's entirely possible that a UA bankruptcy would end up with travelers taking a huge haircut.

Just under $18,000. $1500 already canceled and waiting to rebook. $7800 for a ticket to SYD in May that I think they will end up flying but routing me through SFO instead of IAH (booked 7/2019 so I really can't use this money before July 2020 if I cancel under the waiver) and 2 trips to Europe end of July-August for 2 of us that are wait-and-see.
