Does anyone think the VIP (former Global First) lounges in NRT, LHR and HKG will ever re-open even post-Covid? I don't. And I'll miss them a lot!

Economically, that could be a sound rationale for reopening select United Clubs during this holiday travel season.

I've had a couple enlightening, if depressing conversations with people I trust at different airports in the past week or so re: outstation Club reopenings.
The message is consistent: Each airport has a minimum daily threshold for club members flying UA to/from/through that specific airport before a club will be reopened -- which actually makes a lot of sense given labor/food costs.
At the moment those numbers (at least got the specific airports) are about 40-60% of what they need to be. I didn't feel comfortable pressing fog more details, but at least there's a reasonably firm metric to measure against rather than "some time, some day"... And assuming that the same probably holds true for additional clubs in hubs....though I also think there may be a degree of chicken/egg

I REALLY hope UA can find some money in the 2021 capital budget to finish the EWR C-3 club without cutting too deeply on amenities. Pre-COVID, the paid lounge situation at EWR was (IMO) the worst among ALL US3 hubs, and that won't change until United completes the project.

we'll see. UA available seats to BOS are <<< less than before. The club would not be sustainable IMO. We'll see w/ Thanksgiving and the holiday season, would not be surprised to see the BOS club closed for the time being.

With TSA numbers (post-Labor Day) returning to early August levels in both YoY percentages and absolute numbers -- there is going to have to be some "positive" change to get traffic levels up. Recent COVID counts increasing / plateauing is not going to help that any.
Would lounge reopenings actual drive more passenger traffic -- I doubt it except perhaps for a very small part of the traveling population. Not the corporate / business crowd.

I agree, however. Opening lounges has nothing to do with driving traffic IMO. And since most of the paying lounge passengers were business travelers I don't see the re-opening of lounges a top priority at all for United.

I wonder if competition will drive any changes, e.g., AA and DL reopening clubs at UA hubs and other major airports. Generally speaking, lounges are open at the airports I use (EWR and DEN, primarily) but I've been through a few others, including LGA, over the past few weeks and it's a little frustrating to see United facilities closed when competitors are back open.
But as I said I think there's a small degree of chicken/egg here but to a very small degree, e.g. what % of flyers are true free agents that also have UC membership? How many people are actually flying and truly booking away from UA purely because of the club situation and would instantly return if a club is open? I mean I've inherited 110% of my mother's stubbornness (e.g. I've flown CLE-IAH-ATL just because in 2004 I swore I'd never fly Delta again, despite fare, time, and arguably product advantages the other direction) but even I'm not using club availability in my booking decisions.

Have rephrased to make clearer -- was trying to say post-Labor day numbers have returned to early August levels. The Labor Day peak (partially created by the offset in went Labor Day occurred -- nearly a week later this year) has evaporated

Let’s all remember that entrance to United Clubs is based on a “paid” membership, either by annual fee, or miles (which have a cash value), payment of a annual fee on a United credit card, day passes or by the purchase of many Premium Cabin International flights. United has already received payment on many memberships and has not been providing an adequate level of service, even with the membership extension.
My “miles paid” membership expires end of December and even with DEN being open, I can’t imagine that I (and others) will renew, further reducing United Club revenue. Because they haven’t even announced plans or a schedule to reopen clubs, they have really created their own death spiral.
