Not every guest is you, though.

It works in averages. Of course I do see the occasional person stuff a backpack with fritos and flee, but I also see more people enter a lounge on a *A ticket and just sit for 30 minutes. And moreover, those latter people are sending the lounge operator fixed revenue per visit. 🤷‍♀️

I hear you. On the other hand I’ve never heard an airline say on an analyst call (for any airline) “We had a strong quarter based on our lounge revenue……

I can’t recall lounge revenue/profit ever brought up for any airline on a analyst call as a major profit or revenue producer.

True, as far as I've seen there's no public data. So we do what we do best on FT: conjecture.

I asked about that and was told it would probably follow a full reopening of the Japanese market. Right now pax numbers are still too low to justify it. A few 737s to GUM/SPN probably don't move the needle. Incidentally (and not surprisingly) "no timetable at all" on HKG.

In additon to the explanantion above, I spoke to a couple of GS agents at NRT in the last couple of months while transiting through NRT about reopening of the United Club. I was told there are also contractor issues, and also the lounge (being closed for over two-years) require maintenance and uprading certain faciiities. The contractors used to provide those services went out of business due to Covid, and new contactors will need to be engaged to get UC back to operating state and then traiing contracted staff to fully service the lounge once it is open. I will be transiting NRT again in two weeks, and will see if there is an update to report.

The NH lounge near UA gates is still closed, while the other one near gate 5x is definitely slammed, especially in the busy afternoon hours. And they are accepting priority pass now...

The amazing team at MEX United Club were as excited to have us back as, they were incredibly excited to be back today. Thus, they celebrated in grand fashion!

FYI -- we flew from NRT today -- NH has a new lounge open near gate 22 -- it's down on the lower level and they are NOT accepting day passes. There are no views at all of anything -- but the food and drinks were solid (you don't need UAFlyer and his photography skills) and this lounge is a bit closer to the UA gates than the NH lounge on the other side... Narita was packed today airside -- pretty empty landside. Most stores are still closed, and I was told the UC isn't likely to open soon and they were very apologetic...

Thanks for the update! Will definitely check out the new lounge on my next trip via NRT.

I really like the MEX lounge and am glad to see it reopen!

So, by my count, that leaves NRT, HKG, IAH-A and GUM left to reopen. Not holding my breath on any of them, unfortunately. GUM seems to be like PHX in that it will eventually occupy a new space, but it’s not clear that any work is underway.
