Was not aware of this either but going to united.com/choices and selecting to pay the membership annual fee with miles, it shows 35K miles needed for a September renewal ($525)
Wonder if this would work for a November renewal -- 35K miles I would go for

Just wanted to follow up here. I signed up for the club card last thursday (9/10) and the fee did not get charged yet. I called Chase as I also wanted to redeem the 35k miles for the $525 fee prior to the end of the Sept 30 promo. Chase has told me that the card will be charged on October 1st and there was no way to expedite the fee. They stated that all United Club fees are charged on October 1st, but i'm not sure if this is true. Chase also stated that the ability to redeem miles for the annual fee is not limited to Sept 30 and will be present after. My second question for them was if the rate of redemption would be different after September to which they replied they were not certain and I'd have to call United for the answer.
Called United - Representative has confirmed that the redemption rate will not change before the end of the year. He did bring up that my United account states that my fee has already been paid and my membership does not expire until December 31, 2020. He was quite confused and reached out to his supervisor and wasn't really sure how Chase was handling the fee and membership on their end. I brought up that it could have been due to the extension of subscriptions due to covid.
If both representatives were correct, this seems like a pretty good way to get a UC membership. The card nets 100k miles after $5000 in spend in 3 months. You are also able to redeem award miles that are not earned from the credit card to get a statement equivalent to the annual fee for only 35k miles - netting 65k miles and a UC membership for $5000 in spend. I'll update on October 1st to see what happens.

Thanks for this! As you know, I received my new card a few days into September and have not been charged either. I have an option for using 35k to pay for the card in Choices, but the fee isn’t there...so ...not sure what’s up. Sounds like they don’t really know either.

I've already had a first statement and still no Club charge. Not sure when this will happen, and hoping I can still use only 35k miles for it.
Also, looked at my membership card in the UA app and it says my membership is good until December 31, 2021. So it appears they will not charge the 2nd Club charge until 1/1/2022?

I saw the charge and went right to the United Choices site and redeemed 35k miles (that weren’t even earned from using the card) to reimburse the $525 annual fee. So if you’re able to spend the $5k in 3 months you will walk out ahead with a year of club membership and 65k miles. Seems like a pretty good deal if your able to make use of the club.
