When I try to change it to May 5th, the change fee is waived but not the difference in fare. Am I reading this wrong? I thought the fare difference was waived as well as the fare class (just needs a seat in economy cabin).

The difference in fare is only (currently) waived through April 30. From May 1 - May 27, if there's a seat in your original fare class, the fare difference should be zero or relatively small (UA does price fares differently by the day of the week). For travel after May 27, your original fare would no longer be valid and they'd have to reprice the whole thing.

This.

In general, the change flight tool isn't great at re-computing fares anyway.

Looks like they are banning any foreigners who have been to China within the past 14 days from entering US - I can't find any information on if this includes people who have been to only HK. As a Canadian this would affect me.

Technically Hong Kong is China... I'm sure there will be more details released shortly.

the ban does not include Hong Kong. The US govt does not include Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan when they mention “China”. Travel from Hong Kong is not currently included in the ban provided you did not spend time in China before Hong Kong

if and when Hong Kong is included, it will be called out by name specifically

HK doesn't stamp passports, so they'd have to rely on honesty of the pax 😏

Not so easy to hide your visit to PRC

Unless you can use eChannel (also no stamp).

As a point of reference, DL's suspended their flights to China through APR 30 2020.

Any UA traveler booked in/out of mainland China on or before APR 30 2020 may want to start reviewing contingency plans should UA extend cancelations beyond MAR 28 2020.

Well, I hope people are honest with their declarations and take precautions. It is like following safety instructions onboard - don't be a smart aleck and endanger others.

Guess that means UA's ex-EWR flights are automatically canceled starting tomorrow then?

On board UA 87 PVG EWR today. My friend had to redeem 278K miles to grab the final J seat. UA wanted $10,500 for this.

Full flight. At the gate nobody could deplane as one passenger was escorted by officials. I presume that he was from Hubei. At arrival we were asked brief questions where we were in China then let go when we replied that we only visited shanghai area.

I felt very lucky to be able to secure an Polaris class upgrade on today’s UA 87 back to US.
