The 738 has an additional F/A.

Minimum F/A staffing is 3 for the A319/A320/737-700 and 4 for the 738/739/7M9.

I do see an extra F/A scheduled on some flights but don't know what triggers it.

738 still only has 1 FA for first, the other is for Y. I believe you have to have 1 FA for every 50 PAX.

Ya, once in the air, I've never seen a second FA working up front.

And technically I believe it's per seat, so you need all FAs even when flying half empty plane, at least that is what I've seen posted. But of course, there's also the positioning of FAs for next flight.

You are correct on per seat not pax, even if there were only 1 PAX on the plane there would still have to be 4 FA.

The 4th F/A helps with the meal service in FC and helps with the drink service and trash collection in economy.

738/739 min staffing (4) has 1 FA in the F galley and 1 FA serving in the F aisle to start. Once the service is done, the F aisle FA usually goes back to assist in Y (trash), and the F galley FA will stay up front to clear trays, top off drinks, etc. On the 319/320/73G, 1 FA does the entire F service (galley and aisle), so it's a higher workload. I don't think an extra 4F turns it into an impossible service (since DL, and NW before it, seemed to manage), but that F position consequently becomes pretty undesirable.

The proposed 20F configuration also added a closet to the F cabin.

The 2nd FA (738/739/757) is in the F galley.

It is true that minimum staffing is based on seats in a given configuration, not booked load. On certain flights, subject to a formula I am not familiar with, but taking into account load factor, an extra flight attendant ("load position") may be staffed.
rch4u and AeRoSpaceman like this.

777-300ER new delivery:
N2251U sked delivery flight 2718/29Jan to SFO for Induction. Polaris/PP equipped.
UA's 21st of 22 77Ws. Last one due in March.

Another thread states that in Earnings call, UA will have all 772s converted to Polaris by the summer season. With 7 total mod lines at HKG and XMN UA should be able to have all IPTE and Diamond seats units either converted or in mod by the middle of May. Assuming the next PW units in will be future Polaris units, all PW engined international aircraft should be converted and flying by early May.

Also, the four PW772ERs becoming Domestic will have a slightly different config than 772A units mostly due to lavs behind Door 2 instead of in front of door 2. 32 vs. 28 BF seats and 6 fewer Y seats. There is a swap of about 20 E+ becoming Y seats, maybe due to lavs. AVOD screens will be installed with new seats. Routings have not be revealed, but ORD-HNL/OGG should be included to avoid weight restrictions.
