Far too much personal information requested (and provided) that makes one easily and certainly identifiable by United if all accurate. Personally, I would not give as much information in context of other posts we may make or have made.

I have successfully applied and used 40 PP for a LHR flight last week. Was requested on day of travel.

1. Flight: SFO-LHR
2. Date of flight: Jan 08, 2020
3. Date booked: Dec 10, 2019
4. Fare basis: K
5. Cabin upgrade: Y --> J
6. Date of upgrade: Dec 10, 2019 (waitlisted, not instant clear)
7. Number of PlusPoints: 80

Interestingly, I had a SAN to SFO segment on this leg that has had PZ since ticketing. I didn't want to pay 20 PlusPoints for it if the international segment did not clear. I'm not sure if it's been discussed elsewhere, but with PlusPoints, if you don't request the domestic leg upgrade at the same time as your international upgrade request, you won't get it automatically when you clear the international upgrade. After I cleared the waitlist, I called to apply the instrument to the domestic segment but was told that I would get charged an additional 20 PlusPoints. Hows that for "You’ll only be charged for the highest-priced upgrade you receive?"

Well it's technically true if you'd applied it at booking...

Yep, but that's not how I'm used to using my upgrade certificates. Communicating that policy would have been nice before I requested the upgrade. I would have done it differently has I known.
In the end I'll likely be able to CPU the SAN-SFO but it would have been nice to know it works this way now. And besides all that, I'm absolutely thrilled that I was able to upgrade a 10.5 hour flight to Polaris when I paid less than $500 for the RT and these PlusPoints are about to expire.

It's not loudly spelled out, but that is the policy - it's in the small print on the PP webpage and also in the FT wiki.

I am sorry but why use O for PE cabin? I believe W is more of the industrial standard?

UA uses O/A/R for PP

W, as the lowest economy fare class for 40 PlusPoint upgrades (on Polaris routes), as a well-established meaning for UA flyers.
