No lunch meal service in economy LAX-IAH
flight departed at 11:15, and the only thing the FA offered was pretzels.
no one came down the aisle asking if we wanted lunch
Dont 3+ hour flights count for offering lunch (albeit for purchase)?
or did i just miss having to ask directly for a sandwich to purchase?

Should have been two carts - drinks in first and BoB out of second. Most of the time they ask if anyone wants to buy food. You might have either missed it or maybe a new crew member. A couple of weeks ago I flew IAH-LAS and had to call out to crew in training that I wanted a cheeseburger. The food cart sometimes doesn’t show for 5 minutes after drink cart shows. If that happens if I’m in front part of E+, I tell drink FA I’ll be needing a cheeseburger when he/she gets a chance

What row were you in? It's easy to miss the food cart if you're in the first few rows of E+ as they don't actually bring it that far forward (as it's blocked by the drinks cart)

I asked for the drink and pretzels when the FA was at my row
I figured at some point, another FA would ask about food offerings.
I didnt know that i needed to ask. Lesson learned

As others have, I've learned to request everything at first contact.

Ask at any time! Flying back PDX-EWR, I didn't want to purchase anything during the first drink run when they brought out the BoB. However, when the second drink run came I asked for and received a Tapas box. Even better was that it was free because my card wouldn't work in their system.

This is the prime situation for being missed. Since there's usually a (non-insignificant) lag between drink and food cards, drink FA (in this case) forgot to return to forward rows to ask if anyone wanted BoB. UA really ought to roll the drink cart only when the food cart is ready to go also. Maybe there's a space issue in the back galley where the food cart can't be prepped (ie hot items transferred) until drink cart is gone..
