4 Dec 2019 (updated 29 Dec 2019)
UA Customer Support Agents are now able to extend 31 Jan 2020 expiring 80 PlusPoints to 30 April 2020 for requalified 1Ks (GSs).
At this point, the 80 PlusPoints do not need have come from just GPUs, appears there is no distinction of the original source of the PlusPoints.
This is not correct [anymore]: United MP agents are able to discern if PlusPoints have originated from GPUs or RPUs.
More recently, when calling in, only PlusPoints from GPU's were able to be extended, up to a maximum of 80 PlusPoints to 30 April 2020.
Some have had more success when emailing United as opposed to calling in, although it appears that the extension of PlusPoints from RPUs is an exception rather than the rule.

Historically UA will extend up to 2 GPUs with January expiration to April 30 expiration if the elite has re-qualified for 1K status or GS. Unknown with the change to PlusPoints (4 Dec 2019) if or when a similar extension will be offered and what the form will be.
Generally, UA does not announce the policy until mid to late November. And there is no guarantee the policy will be renewed any year. Will update thread title, if and when, it becomes possible to extend. When UA decides to do this, it can take a week or two before most agents are aware.
The extension can be done via email or phone -- also either by MPSC or phone agents (some phone agents will need to get help).
No extensions of RPUs have been offered in the past. (With the conversion to PlusPoints this may become a moot point). Historically Plats (having no GPUs) have not been included in the extension offer.
And just a reminder, GPUs (or RPUs) cannot be applied to flights scheduled after the expiration date.
Once expired the GPUs cannot be recovered / extended.

expiring RPU points just extended!
My S.O., who is a 1K, called this evening to use his expiring 40 RPU points on an upcoming itinerary. He mentioned to the agent that he was just using up the RPU points on this itinerary because they were going to expire and the agent said to him "well you can extend them to April 30th if you want." So he told the agent to go ahead and extend them instead of applying them to the itinerary. It was always clear from the conversation that he was talking about soon to expire RPU points. The agent extended them no problem. So obviously he was lucky with a very nice agent!

But I suspect the universe of those that have tried this is small to non-existent.

In my experience the answer to this is yes. Agents don't and likely can't look to see how/why someone is 1K. They just look and see that someone is 1K for the 2020 program year. If so, they can extend the 80 points.

I had exactly 80 expiring at the end of the month, with at least 40 coming from RPUs (there may have been an expiring GPU in there, but it's hard to account for since the conversion and subsequent uses. Sent an email to the MP service center and had a positive reply in 1 hour.
I was concerned given others' experiences with extending former RPUs, but my results were favorable. I'd say that generally my experiences with UA customer service have been great.

United won't extend 20 points that will expire
Not sure if this is already known, but I wanted to share my experience today in trying to extend 20 points which will expire at the end of the month.
- I was a 1K member last year with United. I am a 1K member this year, 2020.
- I called United's 1K desk to extend my 20 points to April (last year I was able to extend 1 of my GPUs similarly till April to have more time to use it).
- I was told that I need at least 40 points to extend the expiration date and that my 20 points would be lost end of January if I did not spend it on a flight before end of January.
- I had called in December to check on this topic and back then the United hotline person said I would be able to extend up to 60 points into April 2020.
- Since I have no flights coming up with family or friends, the 20 points will likely be wasted.
Another disappointing United experience for trying to be loyal to the airline.

Usually, only GPUs can be extended. A GPU is equivalent to 40 points, so my guess the incremental value of up to two GPUs (40 or 80 points) can be extended. Your 20 points reflects the value of an unused RPU, which have never been extended.
Edit: I guess some people have managed to get 20 extended. Maybe its a YMMV situation...

So that I understand, you need a minimum of 40 points to extend, and then in increments of 20? Up to how many?
Edit: see this has been moved to the main thread so I think my question has been answered.
