What if? Cancel trip in the middle

Hypothetically, what will the following situation yield?

A person is booked on multi city itinerary:
1. ZRH-IAD on 10/1
2. DCA-EWR on 10/2 (22 hours later)
3. EWR-ZRH on 11/3

Upon arriving to IAD, call United and cancel the remaining of the trip. Will it be possible to rebook the same route (plus change fees) later on or not?

You'll need to look up the fare rules (which is available under united.com manage my reservations, recent addition to website)

Some faress allow change and/or refund, some don't. Fare rules are a little cryptic, but search under surcharges, or cancel or change

Or call United and have them explain it to you (and hopefully the agent doenst misread the rule)

That's all my crystal ball says. Everyone's ticket and fare conditions are different


You can even see the predicted change if you know the new date... Go to united.com and change your flight,see if it's possible. If possible, website will quote you the change fee and fare differences (if applicable)

Yes, (if not a Basic Economy) needs to be rescheduled within a year of the ticket purchase. The Fare Rules may place other limitations on the rebooking.

Additionally, there could be a fare differential due -- especially if you break the fare at IAD ( but with the airport change is maybe a separate fare)

Extending the stay beyond 24 hours at WAS turns that into a stopover, which means if the current fare doesn't allow for stopovers, it'll need to be re-fared.

If you were to buy the ticket you described today, the non-Basic Economy fare is CHF660.15 (assuming economy, lowest available fare). With a stopover at WAS, the fare goes to CHF960.15 instead (assuming there's fare class availability on the flights you want). The CHF660.15 fare has a CHF210 change fee -- so the total cost would be CHF510.

That's just an example; the actual fare difference depends upon your specific fare rules (which might be different than what is for sale right now) and the availability on the specific flights you want to take.

You might also want to look into taking Amtrak between Washington and Newark. Those DCA-EWR microhops are expensive, prone to delay/cancellation and generally miserable. The only reason to fly that route is to connect directly onwards xEWR.

That would definitely result in a re-price, and not necessarily a pleasant one. The ZRH-EWR fares are very cheap in the discount buckets. I didn't look at ZRH-WAS.

The cheapest option would likely be to take the original flight DCA-EWR, then take the train back to Washington. Then postpone EWR-ZRH to a later date. That would likely avoid having to re-fare the entire trip as would occur if staying more than 24 hours in IAD/DCA. Of course, whether the extra time makes sense is only something the OP can decide...

And from the school of crazy airfares, United currently has a 49 cent base fare from the ZRH to EWR. Of course, that's basic economy, and ignores the $300 in "Carrier-imposed surcharge", but still...

Every fare is different, so I can decipher it for you, but I'm not sure it helps. That particular fare does not allow stopovers (STOPOVERS NONE), which means that it wouldn't be able to be used if you extend your stay in DC beyond 24 hours. Your ticket would have to be re-fared, either to a different P fare that allowed stopovers, a Z or higher fare that allowed stopovers, or to a combinable set of BRU-WAS+WAS-EWR fares.

Permitting stopovers in the US is, as far as I'm aware, extremely unusual. If you wanted to use the residual on the ticket it would refare to ZRH-WAS (or BRU-WAS in the second example) using the fare table in effect at purchase and the properties of the new journey, and assuming inventory was available in your cabin at your current rbd and all higher codes, but no lower codes.

I think that's only really true on US-origin fares. I had no problem getting a stopover on ZRH-WAS / WAS-EWR / EWR-ZRH in economy -- just not on the deepest discount fares.
