Today (9/9/2019) EWR to NRT - cancelled UA79, replacement UA2805, 2-2-2 772

Anyone know the backstory here? I landed in EWR this morning and noticed there were two flights scheduled to NRT, one minute apart. UA 79 is the typical daily and an additional UA 2805 on a 777-200 with a wide-open seat map. Checked on the app and noticed that 79 was straight up cancelled.

Is this an equip swap that they went the extra length of saying was a new flight? Just curious about the situation.

Same gate departure too (C121).
Odd.

Not the first time this year I've seen a swap or small delay be posted as a cancel and an extra section... not sure why as it must do a number on their statistics.

Same aircraft will fly back NRT-EWR on Tuesday 9/10/19, same status too

(Original NRT-EWR UA78 777-300ER cancelled, replaced with UA2806 777-200)

How do the customers get informed? They get a cancelled email, then auto rebooked on the same day replacement?

Sucks for J and PE. Switched from true Polaris to 2-2-2, 60 to 50 J seats but don't think anyone got IDB for either direction, no PE

Good for Y, 3-4-3 to 3-3-3

Sounds like related to Typhoon Faxai shutting down HND/NRT for a while.

Not sure why/how though. The flight UA79 cancels & is replaced with a different frame departing from the same gate at virtually the same time??

Probably because that plane didnít take off from japan the day before and land in Newark. Probably the same plan going from Newark to japan and back everyday.

Usually the plane (Polaris 77w) rotates between ewr-nrt and ewr-tlv

Obviously not the case during this IRROPS timeframe

Maybe changing the flight number prevents the problem of oblivious passengers boarding with their old seat number when there's an aircraft change and different seat map. However, it would also give customers the right to rebook for free within certain parameters AFAIK.

Yes. When UA did this with my flight last month, I received the cancellation email/text, and then almost immediately thereafter got the auto-rebooking notice for the special section, which was scheduled to depart two hours after the original flight. Same equipment as original flight (781) - but the cancellation/rebooking resulted in a seat map scramble.

Ah so interesting, so then will they have to do a ferry flight for one of these frames at a certain point? Or can they get back on track after one more go around?
