United To Start Flying 787s From ORD

Mods, feel free to merge into other threads if you think more appropriate.

Just saw on Facebook that United is "introducing Dreamliner service from ORD, beginning in 2020".

Only a Facebook post dated about 20 mins ago, which I can't figure out how to link here. I looked for news story/press release, just nothing else posted yet, just the FB post.

My take: Yuck! While the video teased "Premium Plus" seating, my guess is that it will not be -10s flying, and as the 777s finish up, Chicago is back to being stuck with the non-Polaris hard product.

Not sure if the above link works. My apologies if it doesn't. I looked for a better one, like in a news story, just nothing else posted yet.

Starting off it will be a mix of 787-9/10s and 788s will be introduced later on.

This almost makes up for them "suspending" (dropping) ORD-HKG

Almost

Well, at least hope that the 788s don't show up for a while. I think this will be a net negative for J seats from ORD, certainly a reduced percentage as compared to Y. Still don't like it.

Feel like it makes sense. Having the Dreamliners siloed off at different hubs for all these years hasn’t made a ton of sense. Maybe it means we see routes like LAX/SFO-SYD go back to a 772 once those retrofits are done.

Given the quasi-rocky fleet induction, I think that keeping the Dreamliners confined to a few hubs made a ton of sense, actually. Now that they seem to be dispatching quite reliably (and honestly, the 787-10 seemed to be pretty flawless right from day 1) - sure, open it up to other hubs.

Heck, we had an entire hangar built here at EWR for the Dreamliners (that's the one that got Jeffie-poo canned) - but only started flying the 787-10's here last year. Still no 788 or 789's.

edit: See here... Also spec'd out for the A350's (hahahaha!) https://holtcc.com/portfolio/united-...e-body-hangar/

BRU is a surprise.. I would've thought the 767 was perfect for it. I'm guessing FRA see's the 10 and MUC and BRU get the 9.

This will enable UA offer SYD - ORD, internally codenamed "Project Sundown", after those flying in E- and suffering from DVT by the end of the journey.

Now if only UA did not charge outrageous prices (in J) from ORD... EWR-FRA is between a third or half of the price compared to ORD!

That might be the right size actually. And once again, during a fleet interior upgrade ORD gets the older configs...

That was my reaction. SFO and EWR flyers certainly getting more love on the updated cabins. To the extent they're pulling 789s from SFO, I expect we'll see 781s or Polarised 772s.
