Tourist visa costs about $137.5 each person (up to 60 days stay). This is pricy, compared to $140 for 10-yr Chinese visa.

eVisa is $100 (+2.5% CC processing fee). A regular tourist visa allows multiple entries over five years.

Not the same as the Chinese visa, but also not quite as bad as you've suggested.

eVisa for a US citizen is US$100, plus a 2.5% "bank charge" (less for many other countries - as with some other countries US citizens pay more based on reciprocity)

However literally today India announced changes that could make this much cheaper - https://www.financialexpress.com/lif...eriod/1680565/

How do you get rid of service fees of $35 charged by some companies? Is there an Indian government site that you can apply for an e-visa directly?

Edit: $137.5 = 100 + 2.5 (CC charge) + 35 (company service fees).

Getting and Indian visa was the most painful thing I’ve even endured, including several root canals and a colonoscopy.

What was the issue? It was pretty straight forward for me, other than the bad UI experience. Got evisa approval within 2 days.

Chinese visas are worse. It's gotten better, but before the 10-year visa came in play, I dreaded how often you would have to reapply. Of course, you pay more as a US passport holder than other countries.

In my experience, getting an Indian Visa is painful, however getting an Indian eVisa is pain-free.

My last Indian visa took over 4 weeks before I asked for the application to be cancelled as I needed my passport back. My subsequent Indian eVisa took about 6 hours to be approved and was as simple as a webform.

Currently going through that process without anesthesia.

Sure, you can apply for an e-visa online relatively easily but when you land in India you see that there's a special line for folks with an e-visa that's all backed up. If you happen to land in Mumbai, the segregated section for e-visa holders has a window where you can watch holders of standard visas move through passport control rather quickly as you wait and wait...
