Drug testing FAs

As I'm exiting FRA->DEN today, I overhear a ground staffer saying to the purser: "we need to drug test one of the flight attendants." So I'm curious: is this a DOT thing? A United thing? And is it just random, or do they target somebody on some sort of specific indication? The service on the flight was quite a bit better than usual. Maybe that was the reason for the suspicion.

I'm sure it's all spelled out in the FA contract.

All US carriers have random drug testing. Nothing unusual here.

At the airline I worked, all employees - even corporate for which I was - were subject to quarterly random drug testing.

FWIW - many transportation workers are subject to random drug testing.

FAs are merely a subset of the big group.

Upon gate arrival, you sometimes/often hear the on board announcement "Flight Attendants, all clear," which means the flight is not being met for random drug testing.

It's not so that they can then feel free to light up! It's because some flight attendants "hold it" towards the end of the flight so that when tested upon landing, they can produce a sample. The "all clear" lets them know it's ok to go pee!

How awful. I guess such invasions are necessary in certain regulated industries, but my pee goes in the toilet.

As the referenced document explains there are two requirements -- one from the US DOT / FAA and one from the "company".

Why would a union want to drug test their members?

All airline employees in jobs designated as safety sensitive fall under the DOT drug testing program which includes pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion, and post-incident testing. This includes pilots, flight attendants, mechanics, dispatchers, and many other work groups.

It's not really an invasion when you agree to it. 🤔

They are classified as flight crew if my memory serves me right. So it is a regulatory issue.

The union wouldn't want to test its members, but the union would want to have a say in the employer's drug testing policies and procedures.
