An ID is scanned during initial biometric registration. An individual's document (usually a driver's license) occasionally does not scan correctly (worn/faded/scratches/code resolution/etc), so an alternate ID (eg passport) might come in handy at initial biometric registration.

I’m an existing CLEAR member with an annual subscription, can I take advantage of the United preferred pricing for CLEAR?
If your CLEAR account was created or renewed less than 60 days ago, you’ll receive a refund for the difference of what you paid. Refunds normally take 3-5 business days after you add your United MileagePlus number to your CLEAR account.
Who can become a CLEAR member?
CLEAR welcomes individuals 18 years of age and older.
In order to enroll, you must have one of the following forms of photo identification: US Driver's License, US Passport, US Passport Card, US-issued Permanent Resident Card, State Issued ID, US Military ID, or Global Entry Card.
All forms of identification must be valid, unexpired, not amended and have a photo.

I have signed up the free Clear membership via the link provided above, my question is once I get enrolled at SFO with ID, this membership works cross board for other airlines like Southwest not just United, right?

Yes, CLEAR is seperate from the airline flown.

If the number of people using this service increases by a significant factor, are you now going to be waiting for an available Clear Agent to do the walk up to the doc checker?

They have a support article that mentions Delta pricing taking precedence over Hertz, but I guess they hadn't yet updated their systems to use United?

I used the online web chat to speak to an agent (started off 17 in line, took about 10 minutes till i spoke with an agent), and this is what they told me:

"At this time, we would recommend allowing some time for your online membership to reflect your United pricing. Due to high customer volume, we are seeing some delays with the website today. If for any reason your pricing is not reflected online within 24 hours, please reach back out to CLEAR- Member Services"
I had tried CLEAR about 8 months ago for a free 3 month trial and let it expire as it seemed to rarely be any better than my normal precheck routine. Now that it is Free for 1K's, I might as well take advantage of it.

I also used the provided link to link my MP account to my clear account from within the Clear account. http://my.clearme.com/mileageplus

The entry field seemed "invisible", so I clicked around where I thought it should be and got a cursor and was able to enter my MP number. The website generated a message with a case# and said something to the effect of waiting 24 hours for a response and/or my account updating. It currently wants the full price of $179 for me to re-up, I think I will wait

Do yu know if you have to apply for the refund? I renewed June 14

The issue isn't that you have the same number of people being now processed into two lines instead of one. It's that if CLEAR is an express entry to the front of pre-check, and I'm in the normal pre-check lane, even people who arrive after me will go ahead of me. So you're not just contending with all the people who have arrived to pre-check before you, but also those who arrive to CLEAR after you. It's still all one set of screening equipment, which is the real bottleneck, so wait times for regular pre-check people could be longer on average, during peak times.

I am a CLEAR member through Delta, grandfather in at $99. CLEAR recently raised their prices but allowed existing members to retain old pricing. I dropped my DL account and linked my OnePass account. Now I'm waiting for CLEAR to approve.

My experience is more agents than clients, so even if that doubled (of which I doubt) this would be a non issue.

I have flown with *A/UA solely for years (I can count on one hand the number of non *A flights I've taken the last 10 years), and have hundreds of thousands of UA miles. Why am I paying the same as a silver member, and only $10 less than a general member? Kind of a slap in the face.
If someone’s not flying, or flying very little, why do you care if they get the same price for Clear? They won’t be using it and are throwing money away!

Every time I've walked by Clear there have been 4-6 reps helping 1 or 2 people (perhaps explaining the $179/year fee). So I think you'd need triple the numbers before it even creates any kind of delay, and only then for people who need to be escorted 5 feet.

That's not the point. The CLEAR line largely jumps the Pre-Check line. It's people in Pre-Check without CLEAR who "suffer" at a 1-for-1 level.

So, I try to sign up and get the " MileagePlus number does not match the name entered above. Please try again. " error...

But having checked multiple times, it is. Anyone else seeing that error?

Do you need the Mr/Dr/whatever or am I just completely jetlagged from all the flying and therefore blind?

When I (1k) travel with my spouse (silver) we're usually on a single PNR. How does Clear deal with this, would we both be able to use Clear, or just me? I know that for pre-check if one has it, then both on the PNR get the check-mark, but wasn't sure about Clear as you need to do biometrics.

I think their servers are being overloaded. I got the same message a couple times and it finally worked after 3 or 4 times. But now, after an hour, I have yet to receive my confirmation email that you need to set up your account.

That is a financial decision only you can decide. I'm sure there are plenty of threads for this elsewhere about pay to play. This is about UA and CLEAR, not much different than DL and CLEAR.

I will say your fears aren't warranted, the amount of people using CLEAR has been so minor that at best it will add 20 seconds to you not having it standing in the regular PreCheck Line. I've been doing both for so long I cannot remember, but the incredibly small amount of people from CLEAR has been a non issue, even after DL added what they did. People are cheap, or have personal reasons for not giving away fingerprints, so the buy in is small. This was more likely CLEAR selling UA than UA seeing something earth shattering. Minor and nothing to see here.

To be clear (no pun intended), if you are content with occasionally long PreCheck lines it will cost you nothing, or maybe at most 20 seconds. By choosing CLEAR, you jump the occasional long lines and it might save you 20 minutes. I didn't want to suggest that 20 seconds is worth anything per year. That I wouldn't do.

Also, CLEAR is seperate from PreCheck, you can have CLEAR and not PreCheck, you simply get forwarded to the front of that line as well.

I find the value, but most don't.
