At times, at check-in, the gate assignment is be some weird code that is not a normal gate code. There are a variety of reasons for this but generally it comes down to the "real" gate has not been assigned and the inserted code will be updated -- 3 - 4 - 5 hours before flight. Beware even once a standard gate has been assigned, it is still very possible for the gate assignment to change -- always check cross with App, airport displays, ... a bit before boarding to make sure you have the right gate. (and very rarely it can change after that)

Odd "gate assignments" examples

EWR: BHOLD
LAX: 212, 216, SPT4
SAN: CT
HNL: PAD
CLE: SPOT6, UAPAD
ORD: CG, HCER
IAD: CGRP1 cargo ramp, R22B (charter)

Odd LAX Gate?

After flying out of LAX for 20 years, this is new for me... does anyone have any clue what Gate SPT4 means?

Do I need to show up extra early since I have no clue what to expect?

It'll update sometime before tomorrow morning.

Your plane arrived at LAX last night, and that's it's next scheduled flight - which likely means it's sitting in hanger for maintenance and that's throwing off the gate listed.

I’ve had the same experience: it updates overnight some time.

LAX-SFO will leave from T7 or T8 once a true gate is assigned

It's for Parking SPOT 4.
Which is on their ramp somewhere, and not an actual gate.
But I'm glad they're not actually sending people out there!

SAN Commuter Terminal

I have a United flight on Monday SAN-LAX and the Flight Status is showing the departure gate is CT. Commuter Terminal. The SAN CT ceased to be used as a terminal a while ago and the building has been used as offices for the airport. I have been on a couple of recent flights between SAN and LAX and they were at Terminal 2.

Does anyone know if SAN has reopened the Commuter Terminal for flights? It is a long hike between Termimal 2 (United flights) and the CT so do not want to turn up to the wrong terminal.

Also, mods feel free to move this if I have posted in the wrong area as I could not find topics for airport questions.

It's still Saturday. No gate has been assigned. Check back closer to departure.

Thanks but then it would normally say no gate assigned. I went and checked where the aircraft is arriving from (should have done that first before panicing about the CT reference). Arriving aircraft is coming into Terminal 2. Just strange they would list a terminal for which there are no United flights with a long walk to the correct terminal unless you are an employee (there is an employee bus to the CT).

United IT at work again. 😀

Every UAL flight on Monday is showing CT as the departure gate. That must be the default placeholder at SAN.

I recently flew out of HNL and the placeholder there appears to be "PAD".

What is Gate UP1 at EWR?

UA flew a 772 EWR-BUF for the Jets-Bills game on 9/13, then it returned to EWR at Gate UP1. Is that just a remote stand?

In the B6 club at ORD today saw this one -- haven't seen HCER2 show up in the thread nor have I ever noticed it on an airport monitor/so close to departure...

Edied to add flight to Zurich (UA2782) on the same group of displays shows it departing from CG02

The UA2555 ORDSTL must be a sports charter or the like.

Also, they are apologising to the for the operational delay:

But ostensibly there is no one on the flight:
