Great...so UA is losing a bird it probably needs, especially during summer season, while it twiddles its thumbs for Boeing to spec out a clean-sheet NMA.

On topic though, this is a bit of a strange incident. Definitely unfortunate to lose a useful aircraft, but at least it wasn't worse. Some flight crew may need some re-training, or perhaps some desk jobs.

Passenger interpretation of what one of the pilots said
"At first the pilot said left tire blew, then said maybe an issue with the wing tip, but said she can’t speculate yet."
No remark from this passenger on how the landing felt, whether it bounced then hit nose gear first, etc.
