DL kept their 772s/77Ls at 9-abreast when refitting them with their new suites (cf. UA and the Polaris retrofits)... and JL's 787s are also still 8-abreast in Y

I think he meant all the elements of air travel apart from the actual flight.

JL markets this as the "sky-wider" seat. Pretty smart.

And anyone who has ever observed the people on a subway train in Tokyo and Boston can easily see how even 9-breast would work better for most people in Japan than in North America.

Heard recently (from a pretty reliable source) that the sticking point of cancelling the order is not with Airbus but actually getting out of the Rolls Royce engine order.

25 A350XWB for UA ?

I was going through my United stuff last night and came across a poster of a A350 in rising blue livery, stating “25 A350XWB for United Airlines.” The poster stated deliveries would occur 2016-2019. Did UA cancel these orders outright or are they still on the books somewhere ?

Would be curious to see poll results as to whether or not UA would take delivery of these. I would be inclined to think that it is more likely - I have to imagine that despite the lack of fleet commonality, they may feel some pressure to diversify away from Boeing given the MAX debacle.

There was previously speculation that UA would try to convert the A350 order to A321s, allowing them to drop some MAX. I imagine they might like to do this and add more 787s or 777Xs to fill wide body needs.

A350 is a beautiful plane to fly for the passengers. I have had a number A350 flights across various *A airlines. It is wider than the 787 (also provide an enhanced experience for the passengers), so the J and Y seats are a bit more comfortable than the seats in the 787 subject to specific configurations and specifications.

it is definitely a worthy replacement to the 772/77W. I do wonder when UA will take delivery of these planes. The 772s just got refitted, so I figure they will have another 5 to 8 years of useful life left, and UA still have a number of 787-9s to be delivered.

777-8/777-9 seem to be too big for the UA’s network, so I guess we will more likely to see A350 than not, although the original order was placed almost 10 years ago.

It greatly depends upon the seats. SQ’s A350 is the least comfortable lie-flat J seat I’ve ever flown, and that includes the 2-4-2 UA configuration.

Besides which, what makes you think that UA cares about seat comfort, especially for Y? They’re in the process of taking out perfectly comfortable 9-across 777 Y seats in order to put 10-across seats in.

The 772, maybe; I’d expect the 77Ws to be a core part of the fleet for the next 15+ years. They’re brand new.

If UA wanted the A350, they’d have the A350. Nothing that has transpired up to this point has shaken my belief that we will never see a UA A350.

Airbus has delivered 280 of the 733 ordered with UA expected deliveries in 2022. Do you know something else we don't know?

No, just that UA has continually deferred delivery. As was recently pointed out, they were initially supposed to be delivered from 2016-2019. When a contract is pushed back repeatedly, it’s generally a sign that it will eventually be cancelled.

Probably a good hedge for now if Boeing can't deliver the 77X on a reasonable time frame.
