MP Earnings when doing bid / cash upgrades with *A partners [Consolidated]

Husband and I are flying AKL-PPT on ANZ ticket and ANZ metal. Original fare was Q, which earns PQM. We "one upped" to business class (ie, bid $$ for an upgrade, which was accepted) and are now booked into an R fare. Does anyone know if R fares will still earn PQM? It will be the difference to making 1K for me this year, so eager for the PQM to show. Many thanks in advance!

As far as I understand, you should get credit for the original class paid for. R is an upgrade bucket, so your class should be R (Q), being (Q) the original/accrual fare.

My guess is you will not lose your PQMs.
What matters is what NZ reports to UA -- NZ makes the decision on mileage earning when you fly them.

What R is on NZ, the NZ folks will need to answer.

Best not to assume that a fare class on one carrier have the same meaning as another carrier. There are multiple *A carriers where R is a paid fare class and not the upgrade fare class that UA uses. It appears it may be true here but someone more familiar with NZ needs to verify.

R for NZ works the same a R on UA (i.e is an upgrade class)

Thanks. I was looking at the fare buckets for ANZ on the mileageplus page, and R was not listed as a bucket that earns miles. Hopefully UA will credit PQMs for the original fare class.

NZ (not UA) makes that determination and they should understand their fare class system.

Thanks, kiwimattusa. The PQM and award miles posted exactly as you said -- according to the original airfare.

OneUp Mileage

Hello all,

I'm curious if anyone has experience with how mileage from upgraded flights via OneUp is posted.

Specific case: Using my UA MP number, booked IAH-AKL in Premium Economy (fare class A) on ANZ website. Purchased and confirmed a OneUp upgrade to Business which now shows as fare class R. This particular fare class shows no mileage earning per UA site but I have to imagine this is not truly the case.

My hope is mileage will post according to the original fare class (A).

Thanks!

That is how it should work but there have been reports of other carriers not providing credit if upgraded into R or I fare class. It has taken some persistence for folks to get the operating carrier to acknowledge to UA the paid fare class.

Thanks for the reply -- so in the event I need to chase this down, would you recommend I start with ANZ?

I'll make sure to follow up here with the outcome

You can only communicated with the program operator you are crediting.

Just as an update, the segment has indeed not posted and UA is claiming that it is not eligible for credit. This has to do with the fact that the upgraded flight changed from A class to R class which shows as not eligible on UA's website. I know this because my return flight in A posted as expected.

As I believe the mileage should post according to the originally booked fare class, does anyone have any advice on how I can proceed? I have emailed 2 different agents at this point and have gotten nowhere.

Thank you!

As mentioned earlier, this is starting to happen with multiple airlines as more make use of award fare classes for some upgrades. Below is the advice that has worked for some with this problem on LH and using UA GPUs

Ask the agent to submit a System Issue Form (SIF) together with the mileage request, explaining that you flew in I class, but you paid for a mileage-earning booking class. Note that it takes 6-8 weeks to process an upgraded LH segment after the SIF is submitted.
