Not entirely surprising. I was more surprised when they announced it as a full-year route, as there isn't the same kind of *A feed that other summer seasonals (say, SFO-ZRH and SFO-MUC) has. Perhaps that changes given the outcome of Brexit (as I know Amsterdam got the EU medical HQ and is in the mix for other agencies), but that always seemed a bit ambitious. So much for the 'historic' international expansion announcement from a few months back

So, first United falsely claimed they were the first US carrier to fly between CA and Amsterdam, and now, 3 months after the announcement, it's no longer year round. Good job, United!

It's a tough market for UA because AMS is a SkyTeam hub.

Plus, this would be a long thin route, so it's expensive to operate. Saturating the AMS market with capacity and starting a price war with DL/KLM doesn't seem like it would have been a wise move.

When United makes a good business decision and admits they were wrong, they should not be berated.

they already have IAH-AMS which is by far on of the best flights for PZ availability. I am surprised they are even trying out of SFO.

On the surface, the availability of PZ could indicate that flight is a financial failure for United. If that was the only piece of information I had, I wouldn't expect it to last, though I'm sure there are other reasons for the flight to exist.

Maybe they were/are hoping it would be more successful so they could close down IAH-AMS?

Maybe UA somehow believes that people from the Bay Area especially want to visit Amsterdam? Stereotypes about the availability of drugs and sex workers?

SFO-MUC is going year-round instead, maybe they decided putting the frame on that route makes more sense than AMS...

I believe IAH-AMS is sustained due to the large oil & gas market between the 2 cities.

I think UA should get some credit for attempting to build so much traffic to a non-A* hub. I think once SFO-AMS starts, AMS would see the most flights to a non-A* EU hub from UA, after LHR (even more than CDG, but may have more seats due to larger aircrafts).

That makes a lot more sense as many people would prefer to connect through MUC rather than FRA.

Makes sense. MUC has the connectivity and is an awesome facility. They obviously tested the waters with year-round SFO/AMS and would appear that advance booking projections did not meet target.
