Buying PQMs, PQSs, and PQDs on mystatus.United.com / email

I noticed a new offer today that allows you to buy PQMs and PQSs while earning PQDs on that purchase on mystatus.united.com.

I'm guessing the offers are customized, but mine allows the purchase of up to 15,000 PQM and 15 PQS for $2,230 (and $2,230 PQM.)

I imagine that's a good offer for a Platinum about to become 1K, but with just 1 GPU earned for every 25k miles beyond 1k, it doesn't make much sense for me.

Are you 1K or GS (as indicated under your username)? Also, can we assume that these count as earned in 2019 or would it still be an adjustment to the status that was earned during 2018?

I also received this offer but I will meet 1K requalification by July so it is no use to me.. The Terms and conditions:
  1. Offer is for select United MileagePlus® members and only the original recipient of this offer is eligible to participate.
  2. All Premier® qualifying miles (“PQM“) and Premier qualifying segments (“PQS“) purchased with this offer are nonrefundable.
  3. Must be a MileagePlus member to participate in this offer.
  4. Offer allows, per member, a maximum purchase of 15,000 PQM and 15 PQS toward 2019 PQM and PQS balance and 2020 Premier status qualification. PQM and PQS purchases must be made in increments of 1,000 PQM and 1 PQS; there is no minimum PQM and PQS purchase. Purchased PQM and PQS will be posted to the 2019 PQM and PQS balance in the account of the member listed on the purchase page.
  5. PQM and PQS purchased through this offer only count toward qualification for 2020 Premier status and do not count toward and may not be used for award redemption.
  6. PQM and PQS purchases do count toward the Premier qualifying dollar (“PQD“) requirement for Premier status qualification. PQD earn is equivalent to the purchase price.
  7. Purchases only supplement a member's 2019 PQM, PQS, and PQD balance and can help you meet the PQM, PQS, and PQD requirements for Premier status qualification but do not guarantee status qualification. As part of qualification for any Premier level, members must fly a minimum of four paid flights operated by United® or United Express® during a calendar year, as well as meet other Premier status qualification requirements. (Certain Chase cardholders are exempt from the minimum flight requirement.) View Premier status qualification requirements.
  8. All PQM and PQS are sold in U.S. dollars through this offer.
  9. A customer can make a purchase in connection with this offer only once.
  10. Other restrictions apply.
  11. Fees may vary by member. Offer and fees are subject to change without notice.
  12. PQM/PQS purchased through this offer will be posted to the member's account within 7 business days of the purchase date. If the member qualifies for the next Premier status level through this offer, the member's Premier status level may also take up to 7 business days to update in the member's account.

At ≈15 cmPQM, this is consistent with 1K as 100K PQMs and $15K PQDs

My offer was also up to 15,000 PQM and 15 PQS for $2,230 (for 2019)

Mine is 15,000 PQM/15 PQS for $1,570. Maybe I should consider this more seriously.

I cannot work out the rationale for the PQD. In the past they have always permitted the purchase of PQM and this earned them revenue without the expense of flying the person.

Why the change to letting us now purchase PQD? Quite frankly I would rather TOD and change fees counted for the PQD. If I am unwilling to pay extra for the airfare to meet the PQD why would I pay for the PQD?

Just trying to work out the logic of allowing a buyup for the PQD.

Market product testing?
Is the pickup different than the existing Premier Accelerator?
See what new (higher) price point can be established?
Seems a very reasonable market test and done without changing existing offerings.
If it does not work out for UA, it can disappear without disruption to the other methods.

It's nice that they now throw in PQD, but I still prefer the option where the PQM are cheaper and they also include free air travel
jsloan, onthesam and Kacee like this.

15,000 for $2230.

I could maybe, maybe see doing this is 15k short of 100,000 in December, but a hop to Singapore and back racks up almost 20,000 miles for less than $1,000.

Of course, much of what we do with miles and points borders on irrationality anyway (such as a mileage run to Singapore).
