Will Customer Care ever give a GPU?
I was recently given some miles by Customer Care for a bad experience. I have no complaints as to how it was handled. I am short one GPU for a family round-trip to Europe. Could I have asked for a GPU instead? Is there any other way to get a comp GPU? |

Several years ago before merger, I was given a SWU for tipping a website bug to UA. :p
It was from UA customer service. |
I have gotten one before, but it was a recovery where the issues was related to a GPU. Never seen it as a general service recovery gesture.
|
I've never had it happen to me, nor have I heard of it happening to anyone I know, and I don't recall ever hearing about it on FlyerTalk (at least not since I started following UA closely after the CO merger).
But that doesn't mean it hasn't happened or can't happen :) |
I've received maybe two, maybe three, SWU's (pre-merger). At least one was VDB compensation.
|
I have heard of it happening post-merger under extraordinary circumstances (i.e., massive onboard service failures [vs. delays, airport issues, etc.]).
|
I received one pre-merger many years ago at BWI because of a long delay involving an aircraft swap. In fact, every 1K received one. It was printed on a flight coupon and had to be mailed in to Mileage Plus.

Not really. As United CS typically gives something that has perceived value. |
yes, but its usually the CANCEL the GPU you used. Because of a service problem the put a GPU back into your account so you didn't really get an extra one.
|
I got a SWU plus a cash refund several years ago so that a VIP's bodyguard could have my seat in domestic F.
I was given no choice in the matter and UA went out of their way to make me happy. |
Never happened to me in almost 4.7MM on United. I’ve been given a couple of complimentary or operational upgrades at the gate but this is exceedingly rare. This hasn’t happened since I hit 4MM and received LT GS status, came close the other day flying from ICN to SFO but it didn’t happen. |
In August, 2001 (just prior to 9/11), I was flying ARN-LHR-JFK-LAX. It was a paid coach fare. ARN-LHR was on SAS, with the other flight on UA with a (then) SWU. The SAS flight got in 20 minutes late, and I missed the cut off with UA. Customer service rerouted me via SFO in paid C. They were going to return my SWU, but as it was about to expire, they reissued it to expire a year into the future! This wa a huge plus. At the time, JFK-LAX was on a 767 before PS service was introduced. Not a great flight. LHR-SFO was on a 747! |

Direct flight, F all the way (rather than Y/C), and got to spend the next few hours in the IFL at SFO waiting for my flight to depart - plus got paid $300 or so in vouchers for the VDB. |
