amusing Seattle P-I article on GS

As someone far removed from GS, I liked this quote:

"The number one most cherished benefit is when there are irregular operations," said the Boston-based Global Services member. "United fixes it, and they fix it proactively. They do everything in their power to do something."

The flier remembered one such instance when his flight out of Shanghai was delayed because of a mechanical problem onboard the plane.

"The Global Services employee boarded the plane, came up to me, and whispered in my ear: the crew doesn't know this yet, but we are going to cancel the flight. But I've booked you on the last business class seat available on another flight home," the flier remembers the agent saying.

"Everyone else is flying home in coach or staying overnight."

The article refers to "full fare" in mid-march. I assume that is J/F....

A quick search shows 16.35k for nonstop and 19.45k via iah.

Not proud about it, but I've paid ~$12k a few times on that route in F and it was still A fares.

passengers with disabilities and active military members board before GS.

Not saying that it is the right or wrong way of doing things, but the article says GS boards first, which is not factually correct.

Anything that books into J is running you roughly $19k round-trip. Two one-ways in J would be over 20.

I had the exact same experience a few years ago. I was on PEK-SFO (doing PEK-SFO-IAD) waiting on a 744 during taxing to the runway.Pilot came on the PA system informing us that there was a mechanical issue and plane needed to return to the gate for check. A GS agent came on board and quietly to me almost the same thing as the one highlighted in the quote above. I was then escorted out of the plane by the GS agent, went through China immigration twice (once to reenter into the country and then left the country), security check and then escorted onto a golf cart to the PEK-EWR flight. It appeared I was the last one to board and I did not see any other seats vacant in the premium cabin. I was also told my checked bags were transferred over to the EWR bound flight.This part of story in the article that I can relate to. I was happy to be able to get to my meeting the next day without having to miss it from the original flight being cancelled.

I also had the exact same thing happen ex-Asia. It was a pretty impressive experience being taken care of before the flight crew or anyone else was even aware of the problem.

Cute article. My favorite story is slightly different. I was flying through SFO coming from Korea, on my way home, also BOS. I’m sitting in my coach isle seat and a another passenger walks up with his BP showing the same seat number as mine. He had no status indicated on his BP. I refused to surrender my seat as the plane was packed and I wanted to get home. The next thing I knew the Gate Agent was standing their asking me to move to a middle seat in the back of the plane. I made it clear I had picked up my BP in Korea 12 hours earlier, long before the other gentleman had gotten his and that I had no intention of moving. After a couple of minutes the other passenger gave up and took the other seat. The gate agent didn’t have a yellow tie.

Expected outcome, but this shouldn't really have ever happened to begin with, you being GS or not.

It's easier to fly airlines that don't have so much to fix.
