ERJ-145 acceptable decibel level?
Anyone know what OSHA has determined to be the acceptable decibel level on aircraft? flew two ERJ-145 legs this Friday and yesterday and used a decibel meter on my iPhone - levels averaged 93.1 with a high of 115.7. Ears were killing me after both flights.

85db is what is called the "action level" regarding OSHA requirements for hearing protection in the workplace. Not sure how that requirement would impact or relate to passengers.

Hence, I either wear noise cancelling headphones/earbuds or foam hearing protection on all flights. Anything above 115 dBA is approaching the pain threshold and should be avoided. Question, were you measuring dBA or dB? dBA measurement is used for human hearing as it closely measures along the human hearing threshold.

Did they leave the door open?
I've always found the ERJs pretty quiet - certainly quieter than sitting in the exit row of a 737.

Same. Although I recall on the last couple E145s in the exit row, I recall hearing a "sucking/whooshing" sound coming from the window during takeoff and final approach. Annoying, but certainly not uncomfortable.

buy earplugs or headphones, especially for RJ ops where you might not board from a jetway and may be exposed to APU and other noise at ground level. there’s a reason why all rampers wear hearing protection.

1:46. So was this during an airstart (inop apu)? Average of under 2 min when it has a decreasing level over time seems like it might not be a representative sample of the trip.

It does say 1m46s, though.
