Oh, I dunno...maybe the fact that UA flew 28 million folks in/out of EWR and the next closet airline flew 2 million (2017 stats)? EWR and UA are joined at the hip.

The affected parking deck is attached t the main terminal that UA uses.
...According to police, 15 of the burnt vehicles were totaled and while the cause of the blaze remains under investigation, it is suspected to be caused by one of the now-charred cars.

That vehicle's owner was reportedly arrested when he heard about the fire and headed from the airport to his parked vehicle to check it out. Curiously, the unnamed man was not charged for his connection to the fire but for outstanding traffic warrants as well as a suspended driver's license. The man also reportedly told police a few weeks ago that he was working on the vehicle's alternator. It is now being investigated as a possible cause of the fire.
...

Yes...Terminal C, which factored into my decision to post it here. 99% chance that those cars belong to UA passengers. Well, maybe 95%.

Of course this thread could easily get moved...

A long time ago I had an alternator with a bad regulator, and my battery swelled so much I was afraid it would explode. And/or if he had a diode fail and short to ground the heat from the battery could easily start an under-hood fire, too.

How much compensation and in what forms do you think they'll ask for?

It happened at the parking lot for Terminal C, which is 100% United - so at least technically all 17 cars belong(ed) to a UA customer.

As a person who flew home to EWR this evening, (watching this fire on the local NY news on the now free Direct TV), I was certainly happy it wasn't my car!
