Options for WAS-ADL

Looking to fly DCA-ADL in September in J and want to try NZ. Options are basically DCA/IAD-IAH/LAX/ORD/SFO-AKL-ADL.
  • I like the earlier departure from IAH
  • AKL-ORD is very tempting since short flight after arriving ORD
  • Curious to see polaris lounge at LAX but not interested in 5 hour transcon in a 737 before the transpac flight
  • AKL-ADL is flown by widebody so much nicer connection than SYD/MEL on QF
  • Would have to leave ADL at 0600 to return via SYD/MEL - no thanks

Any other thoughts/points I'm not considering?

Current plan is DCA-IAH-AKL-ADL and ADL-AKL-ORD-DCA

Would UA be able to book for me if I call? Can't get united.com nor anz.com to price this out but does work on google flights and expedia.

Thanks!

That plan seems reasonable to me.

If you can get it on google flights, and google flights generates a link to UA, just use that. It will be as if you booked on united.com but you won't need to fuss with the poor search functionality.

Seems unlikely. The UA fares require flying UA metal TPAC and the NZ fares don't permit off-plating.

ADL from USA is a little difficult to get to. Via Asia (SQ SIN, CX HKG) and ME (EK DXB QR DOH) are options other than across the pacific.
Both UA & NZ airlines will want you to fly trans Pac on their aircraft.

UA will put on an Au domestic airline:- QF JQ VA. Have seen reports of all 3 being used by UA. UA basically being a travel agent for Au domestic flights.

Air NZ try hard for Au to USA market. Transiting airside at AKL is better than the annoying SYD domestic international terminal shuffle.

Or could a real live walking talking travel agent get the route you want.
Not some computer programme/3rd world screen jockey who has never flown (expedia etc).

Have you considered routing via SIN in (at least) one direction adding SQ to the mix?

No, I'm lucky enough to be flying EWR-SIN in March and all the options for ADL include AS to LAX/SFO. I did see DCA-ORD-HND-SYD-ADL which was appealing for a split second since I love flying NH.

FWIW MEL is fairly easy to connect at, I like the airport as everything is walkable unlike SYD. AKL is also good connection but you are going to pay and I find the jet lag annoying waiting for the NZ-AU connections. Some of the return connections ex AU on NZ can be a long wait for their north American flights.

What about building in the NZ weekly flight LAX-RAR?

Don't think it operates on the days I need to travel.

Too bad. I'd adjust my travels to add in a stop in RAR, if I were on NZ heading down under.

I just did a quick search and anz.com priced it out for me. Try searching it in Google Flights and then clicking the link to book through ANZ. If this doesn't work, it's weird that it works for me and not you.

Yeah, it's rough. IAD-SFO-AKL-ADL is all lie-flat and gets you UA PQD but the timing is terrible. From the way you asked though, I assume that the PQD is not make-or-break.
