Airplane Skids Off Runway in Chicago Due to Winter Weather

Plane skids off runway at Chicago O’Hare airport, officials say

According to WGN9 in Chicago:
A United Airlines plane skidded off the runway at Chicago O’Hare International Airport shortly before noon Saturday, Chicago fire officials said.

No injuries were reported. There were 129 people aboard United Airlines flight No. 656 from Phoenix when it landed.

Chicago Fire Department officials said the incident was likely due to weather. It’s been snowing in Chicago since Friday night. Some northwest suburbs reported 8.5 inches of snow Saturday. More than 900 flights have been canceled at Chicago airports as of 12:48 p.m. Saturday.

Glad everybody is ok.
Flying TATL from the westcoast I am trying to avoid ORD, EWR during winter/adverse weather conditions. Great, that SFO has been building up its TATL network..

Safety taking a back seat to flight completion by trying to run operations too far into a snow storm?

Avg delay at ORD is 6 hours now. They needed to call it a day and cancel before this happened.

Snow had tapered off for the most part when this occurred and was gone by 1PM. Potential for more tonight, and gusting winds is still an issue, but my best guess is currently trying to just get aircraft where they need to be tomorrow morning.

i was thinking more along the lines of the 739’s approach speed and braking/reverser capabilities.

We are now second guessing the Captain and First Officer who were there?

Curious—how does approach speed/ braking performance compare to A321 or 757?

Can't answer specifically but 739's approach speed is significantly higher than a 772 so I would imagine significantly higher than the two you asked about as well. It's notorious among pilots for being a difficult aircraft to land.

The fact that their plane left the runway is SOME information... that's not supposed to happen.
