Everything you want to know about where to sit on the 787-10

With the 78J now entering scheduled service it might be a good time to assemble information about the good & not-so-good seats on this new UA aircraft.

A couple of first impressions from the inaugurals this Monday:
J-cabin (new Polaris seats) overall feels very similar to the 77W / 772 seats. Row 5 window seats (5A & 5L) have only 1 window about 2 feet forward of the seat-back in upright position. I found the footwell to be wide enough for me (6' tall) as a side-sleeper. Inflight noise from engine, outside airflow was minimal in the J-cabin.

PP-cabin feature 2-3-2 configuration, with 19" seat width and leg-rests on all seats (unlike AA). The bulkhead row 20 appears to have most legroom.

Thanks! Moved from 5A to row 7 for my February flight SFO-EWR.

On an upcoming flight I originally selected 5A. After reviewing cabin photos and blogger early access content I deduced the seat access was missing a window. Glad to see it confirmed. I've switched to 1L for now. Evening flight EWR-LAX, so I guess FA/galley movement and noise won't matter since I am not sleeping. Looking forward to more information however.

You're welcome, Kacee! Yes, in 5A/L you actually have to lean forward quite a bit to get a good look out of the window.
This is almost impossible to achieve during take-off and landing, when the shoulderstrap has to be worn.

Thanks for info.

Same with PP. As a matter of fact, I sat in row 21 (window seat) on the return, and the engine was right there outside the window.

J seat felt tight to me (row 7). Felt more roomier on the PP seat.

Odd numbered seats in J are still best for privacy.

A lot of people on my return flight had trouble locating the headphone plug in PP. The location placement is not great.

I had a better experience in PP than in J. This would be my pick, even if P fares are there at somewhere between $500-$600, especially on the shorter flying time from the west coast to the east.

Interesting. Wasn't expecting such a comment.

Where is it located?

I wasn't either. Let's just say I am very impressed with PP.

Depending on the seat, under the arm rest, to left or right back corner of the seat. Headphone is the same for J and PP pax, at least on the transcon route.

Just want to chime in, I felt cramped in 20A, the Premium Plus section. There is no cutout in the bulkhead, and of course you have to store your carry on bags. I probably would opt for 21 or 22 instead, but that's just me. I also agree that the outlet and headphone jack is in an awful, hard to reach location unless you're a little kid. I had to stand up from my seat to be able to plug it in.

787 is 1.5 feet narrower in width than the 777, so the Polaris seat width will need to absorb that difference.

So the Polaris seats are narrower than on a 777...yikes!

That makes perfect sense... number of J seats across in 78J is the same as 77W but there are only 7 across in PE vs 8.

Background: Was scheduled to fly EWR-LAX on 3 JAN 2019 on the 787-8. Upgrade was cleared (surprisingly) 1 week prior to the flight. 2 days prior to the flight, I noticed that the seating had changed from standard business to Polaris business. Digging a bit more and found out that the plane has been upgauged to the 787-10, ship #1001 .

Here are some pictures:

If I had checked seatguru prior to the flight, I would have known that seat 5A was a misaligned window seat. Not a big deal, but just one of those things.

The 787-10 has the spacebins for the bins along the windows, so you can store the rollerboards sideways.

The seat was narrower and shorter than I expected. At 5'11", I pretty much filled up the entire length of the seat in lay-flat mode.

There were 4 flight attendants working in the Polaris cabin, although one of those was clearly not well (she told me she had a sinus issue) and barely performed her duties. As an example, my coat was hung on the seat's coat hook, and no one offered to store it in the closet. FYI, the coat closet is located in between Polaris and Premium Plus, not in front.

For Ship #1001 , there was an issue with the movies, where the sound is coming out of the short prong plug and not the standard plug. Therefore, you have to use the supplied headphone and not your own, for movies. This may have caused the reported issue regarding audio in the previous thread

I am sitting at the same seat (7A) as your inbound flight. No volume coming out of the headset :(

Catering also boarded the wrong headset, so they had to get them to re-supply the headphones. FYI, your own headset works fine for the music selections. No selection for Channel 9, but I am guessing it's a programming issue, where they did not add that in as an option.

Also, for my seat, I noticed that there were frequent video freezes, while the audio continues. Also, after each PA announcement, the screen would reset back to the movie description screen as if I had pressed the stop button. Fortunately, there was a tech from Panasonic onboard (beta-testing flight?), I reported all the issues to her. She recommended resetting the seat, and that seemed to have resolved both issues.

Standard premium transcon business class catering, although they changed the cart for ice cream/dessert - less fancy, more sturdy/utilitarian.

Standard 787 lavatories, with sensor-based flush buttons and faucets.

Overall, it was a nice ride with a widebody plane.

United website says 22" vs. 20.5" for J in 777 vs 787
For PE it's 18.5" vs. 19" (dropping one seat helps the 787)
