I thought that UA never overbooks premium cabins?

They generally don't. However, there have been multiple instances of UA overbooking J by 1 on international long-haul flights, presumably on flights where they have a high expectation of a cancellation or mis-connect.

I have been caught in this exact situation twice. Once on an LAX > LIH flight and once on an ORD > LHR flight. In both instances F/J was over by 1.

Sometimes it may also be caused by aircraft change. Once heard gate agent offering $1000 to bump 4 first-class passengers after A320 swapped by A319.

BGR-ORD oversold by 1 yesterday. I volunteered when I checked in on the app, and when I arrived, the gate agent said she would probably need me. The initial offer was $500. I pretended to not really be interested and she bumped it to $800. I was rebooked on Delta on a CRJ-200 which was awful but it was worth the $800.

EWR-BGR last Friday, 8/9. Oversold by 1, flight already delayed because of the weather cluster at EWR. Initial offer 2,500, bumped up to 3,000 in about 2 minutes. Got one interested party.

BGR-EWR return on 8/11 oversold by 1, some poor soul took a really low offer, something like $200.

in the age of post-Dao (even pre-Dao), no one is going to take 2,500 miles for a vdb.

Are you absolutely sure? That would have had to have been for a travel voucher.

In my haste I seem to have omitted the "*voucher towards a future United flight"

correct. These payouts are in the form of TCVA vouchers which are good for travel credit on UA and UAex. For people like me, they are as good as cash.

I posted a few months back regarding a TATL flight my parents were on that oversold J (on the 787-10) by 1, and immediately offered $10,000 TCVA for one volunteer to move back or switch to a different flight. I have also personally seen SFO-SIN on a couple occasions over by 1 in J, though missed connectiones rectified that situation. It happens, and the statisticians are certainly interested in ensuring maximum revenue in the J cabin, even if it means issuing some significant UA funny munny.

8/14 GVA to EWR, Coach was full and 2 on the standby list but Polaris business was only booked 8(+10) out of 30. When I was at the airport and checking the app, it gave me options to take a later flight with a confirmed seat for $350 ETC or put in a bid for those later flights. I put in $1500 for those 3 flights that showed. When I got to the gate and checked the app, my seat opened up so I thought they took my bid but they ended up bumping me up to Polaris business! Finally a free upgrade but i would've been ok for GVA-IAD-EWR for $1500...
