UA1 (now UA2809) SFO-SIN downguage and chaos 17JAN

An hour or 2 before scheduled boarding, equipment swap from 787-9 to 787-8, so reduction in J from 48 to 36, as well as another ~20 pax in coach. I was connecting from IAH, mayhem at the gate, and all the folks who got cut were sent to desks landside. GS line & Polaris lounge staff had no idea what was going on. THIS is when being GS makes a difference, I just kept reloading itinerary on my phone, got a preferred J seat. Also now know that 787-8 can reach SFO-SIN (ok were still 4 hours away, but Im still hopeful )

Looks like a good handful of seats were blocked in Y. Hopefully the other late night *A departures had open seats.

Not surprising. Eastbound TPACs pose much less of a range/performance problem than westbound TPACs do, especially at this time of year when winds aloft are very strong.

There a separate thread for UA 179 (EWR-HKG) 19 Jan 2019 diverted YYR , passengers stuck on board for 13 hours -- let's focus discussion of that incident in that thread.

Flight status is showing UA929 (LHR-ORD) diverted to BOS. Anybody know what happened?

There they go again. UA 179 2:45 late out of the gate on Jan 21.
I'm on this flight tomorrow and the batting average lately is poor.

Maybe they had enough crew or crew with enough time on the clock to get to BOS but not ORD, so they flew to BOS and re-crewed?

Looks like UA179 is on time and so far not diverting

flight was on time, so that seems strange ... plus going to ORD vs. BOS ... very small difference. Wondering if they had some crews stuck with the winter storm the days before and needed to get things back on track. It is strange, also very short time on the ground in Boston.

3953 vs 3265 miles = 21% farther to ORD vs. BOS.

The only airline that flies both routes, BA, blocks them at 8h50m vs 7h40m.

I believe 8 hours is the limit with an unaugmented crew for daytime departures (someone please correct me). My guess is the flight crew had plenty of time (fresh from hotel) but they were down one pilot (they had Captain + FO, but no relief pilot). The winds were favorable so they felt confident they could hit BOS in < 8 hours, quick re-crew (plenty of warning to get a crew in place) and fly the last 2 hours to ORD. Better than holding the flight at LHR and letting the two pilots time out while they are looking for a third.

Looks like the flight to BOS took about 7h30m.
