This. And it goes all the way down to the Express level...My small airport invariably sees 3 daily round trips to ORD, all CRJ service. Otherwise inexplicably, it’s gone down to 2 daily for the entire month of July (started precisely on July 1, and goes back to 3X daily on August 1). Airport friend told me that corporate said it’s a direct result of the Max grounding, and other small airports will see the same, if they haven’t already, in the coming months.

Really hope some of those CR5s will make it to MSN, replacing some of the ER4s on MSN-EWR and -ORD

I would be surprised if EWR sees many of these - I don’t think any CR7s fly through EWR right now, and I don’t think the regional airlines that fly them are the ones flying to EWR either. I would expect that EWR will see more E175s as ExpressJet starts flying them (as opposed to exclusively flying E145s).

A an intermediate-term goal is for ExpressJet to be all-E75 at EWR and CommutAir to operate all of the ERJs. Eventually, UA wants to have 50-seaters out of EWR entirely (for capacity reasons).

Not that they couldn't change their mind.... but originally UA said the 550's would serve routes for ORD & EWR

If I remember correctly, there were unique missions for which these aircraft would be assigned. Mainly more rural business cities with premium demand, generally connecting to international destinations. The reason they don’t have 2 cabin service today is because they can’t quite support a 70 seater, and there’s not enough of them. Thus we will see these aircraft possibly deployed to XNA, CVG, MLI, MSN from ORD; perhaps DCA, YOW, YYZ, CVG, from EWR. Again, only my speculation based on the stated goals for these AC.

YES. One million times, YES. This would make me quite happy indeed. I occasionally catch an E175 to DFW, ATL and CMH - and they're all great rides. CMH is usually an E145, so upgauging all the EWR-CMH flights to E175's would be great. Would take a CRJ550 to CMH too, if UA finds that appropriate. :-)

I expect the CR5s to be heavily oriented to ORD, at least initially. ORD still has a high % of 50-seaters, and with limited gate capacity and competition from AA (with less-restrictive scope), it’s a way for UA to grow premium-cabin ASMs within the existing footprint and offer a more compelling product to customers.

  • From 2nd Quarter Earnings Report.
  • UA Signed agreement to purchase 19 used Boeing 737-700 aircraft with deliveries expected beginning in December.
73Gs could be WestJet, SAS or China Southern or China Eastern. Only airlines with big enough fleet except Southwest and UA won't buy aircraft with that many cycles.

Doubt WestJet as they have MAX issues as does China Southern. SAS doesn't show MAX aircraft in fleet.

Looking at the earnings call slides (call about to begin), it appears the CR5s will also be deployed to EWR early on, which is a pleasant surprise. I expected them to be mostly ORD-oriented.

Will these have the traditional 737-700 layouts with only 6 "first class" seats?
