The list currently shows the new A319 orders as arriving with Ku-band wifi. This is no longer accurate. Viasat announced this morning that the next 34 A319s will arrive with its Ka-band service, similar to that being installed on the 737 MAX fleet.

(Link to my coverage of the news; per FT rules you've been warned.)

77W just appeared in service on EWR-HKG route as I was searching randomly, March 1. Doesn't assuage my frustration / anger at UA though, for not releasing any significant award space though, for the entire spring months...

When will the A359 delivered to UA? The 772 are so old already... (no matter ER or non ER)

UA's management clearly does not want the A350. I will personally be surprised if they are ever delivered.

They deferred to 2022.

I share the same sentiment but don't understand why they upped the "order" to 45.

Well, an A350 order is more valuable to UA than an A350 airplane would be. It gives them leverage over both companies -- they take it to Boeing and say "make me a better offer," and they take it to Airbus and say "make me a deal on the A320 series or I'll cancel."

I assume they had to up it to 45 in order to get Airbus to agree to defer delivery.

So I am not really familiar with how those contracts work but presumably UA can't just cancel with no penalties? Maybe they paid some sort of deposit they now can't get back? Point being, are they really better off forfeiting that money than taking new planes?

There's always a penalty, but everything's negotiable.

I don't know the financials in detail. All I know is that you don't continually defer a purchase the way that UA has if you are actually attempting to acquire the goods in question.

It's often better to take one short-term hit than to acquire an asset that you're expecting to be a money-loser.

My guess is that UA is waiting for Boeing to formally launch/offer the NMA (aka 797), rumored to be at the June air show in France. Then UA can negotiate for a large order of 777Xs and 797s. I too believe the A350 will be cancelled -- maybe in exchange for some number of A320neos and/or A321neos.

My guess is if the MMA aircraft is what UA wants they can keep the 350 order or replace narrowbodies with 320/321. But, if the MMA doesn't look like it would work well for UA, then they can convert the 350 orders to the 321LR, if it is proved to work well as a 757 replacement.
Who knows what the MMA will be. Narrowbody to replace 757, a 767 looking aircraft that has good cargo capability, something completely different.
I can't think of why an airline would want something like the 762, stubby twin aisle with maybe 7 or 8 across. Efficiency is with 6 across single aisle or at least 8 across twin aisle with standard LD3 containers.

Back in the day, IIRC, NW was among first to order the DreamLiner (ANA launch customer, CO launch N. American customer). pmUA came along a little later IIRC, splitting the order between 787 and 350.

Now to the point - post merger DL did not want 787s, deferred at first, but actually cancelled relatively quick - of course they had the luxury of Boeing's delays (those by many accounts really hurt CO who bet big time on DreamLiner).

Who knows what the penalty was, but DL did not want this plane for some reason, and IIRC just a few years ago again rejected it in favor of A330 NEO.
