IPTE seats will remain on the 4 777-222ER going to a domestic configuration: 2 more pairs will be added in a new (last) row enabled by the relocation aft of the two lavatories currently forward of 2L/R. This will result in 2 fewer seats overall (6Y seats), so it will be a 32F/330Y configuration. It is unclear whether the other 19 77G will go this route.

To be exact, "relocation" of the lavs is in comparison to the existing HD configuration. The lavs exist on the 772ER behind Door 2, so UA isn't moving them to become a carbon copy of the 772A HD config. Note that there already are 2 different 772A configurations with minor changes due to lavs at Doors 3 & 4.
I would be shocked if UA spent tons of money and 2 more STCs to relocate lavs on 19 older 772As to match a configuration that seems to have the lavs remain to save money. If 4 more F seats are needed on teh772A, UA could shift the galley aft to add 4 F seats behind row 4 by pulling 4 Y seats (16DEFG).

While the configurations are within a few seats in each class and swaps shouldn't be a huge issue, one would guess these 4 aircraft will likely be seen flying into/out of HNL. ORD-HNL for sure plus possibly ORD-OGG, HNL-GUM, HNL-IAH and on HNL-EWR (if ever upgraded). That is more flights than 4 units can provide.

Could more 772ERs go to the domestic configuration as more 787s are delivered? It would be a waste to rip out Polaris seating unless UA were to buy more 77Ws. But as the 772As age and more new international units come online it gives UA the option to move more 772ERs to domestic duty.

If UA goes that route, I would hope they add Polaris-configured 77Es to the premium TCON routes - adds capacity / perhaps allows them to lead on premium seating on other routes (e.g. LAX-BOS, or anything else cross-country) instead of simply reacting to whenever B6 decides to add MINT to another route.

UA just ordered 50 321XLRs in 2024 to replace the 757. Seems to be about time.

My guess if it were only to refit the seats, probably 1-2 weeks. But since all the 772 retrofits have been done in conjunction with D-check heavy maintenance that occurs once every 7 years, none have taken less than 5-6 weeks since that is how long the maintenance takes.
