UA in recent years has actually had a pretty high fleet utilization and don't usually have spares sitting around as an aircraft doesn't make money sitting on the ground*. UA usually completely fills the schedule in the northern summer (usually March-October schedule) then does scheduled maintenance in the winter. They don't just have an extra aircraft sitting at every hub waiting for a flight to cancel.

*The one exception I could think of to this would be when UA had a 777 in STN for 2 weeks for filming the new Spider Man movie

That could be regarding spares, then maybe aircraft sitting in hubs are in for routine maint. With an airline of 768 aircraft, some will be on the ground.
Right now I see the following aircraft in hubs for 22 hours plus, (7 of 185 wide bodies, not counting those in contract maint and mod./paint -- 9 of 582 narrowbodies, not counting contract maint and mod/paint. There are also a couple more at many hubs that came in yesterday and haven't flown today. In general, I surely don't have and idea of what each is doing.

Ya, but no matter when I'm changing planes at SFO or IAH, there are ALWAYS widebody frames that look like they are just sitting around.

Even with a long connection, many of them never move, but of course it's possible they leave shortly after I do.

At SFO, they can't leave the aircraft at the G Terminal gates, as there is a major shortage of gates right now. They park them at the east field, then tow them over for boarding.

Anyone know why N666UA took such a long time in HKG?

That's the first a/c in the new 76L configuration; in addition to the normal squawks associated with new interior, electronics, other upgrades, etc., it also has to receive Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) approval, which is a slightly more lengthy process than for a mod which has already received an STC.

Oh I see -- though now I wonder how these 763s are different from the previously retrofitted 763s, why didn't they change them to the same configuration?

And once N57855 finishes, I think that finally closes the door on the Koito debacle, yes?

They are in a high-premium (46J/22W/99Y) configuration for major business markets like LHR which demand large J cabins but don't need the corresponding volume of Y seats at UA-standard density.

For Y seating, yes, but plenty of 737-800s and 737-900 (non-ER) still have Koito F seats, though I'm not sure if those seats were involved in the testing falsification scandal.

I'm sort of torn on those seats... they are pretty worn-out, and more often than not, recline unevenly, but when they do recline properly, they go back quite a bit more than the newer seats found on the 737-900ERs. They also have sturdy traytables and convenient storage cubbies on the inner armrests. The -900ER seats have useless headrest wings, traytables that are falling apart, little to no padding and no storage besides the seat pocket.

I actually agree with you. They're like your favorite old la-z-boy. Worn, dated, really belong in the 70s, but hard to part with because they're oh so darn comfortable. I never liked the pmUA F seats - they had a metal bar that ran down the middle of my back and dug in. These old Koito seats may burn me alive, but at least I'd be comfy during it... haha.
