As for TLV, I think they can have nonstop ORD-TLV by operated 777 aircraft.
No, they won't bringing CLE hub back. Sorry!
No, UA won't returns to JFK for a quite some time.
Actually, they tried and it didn't workout so well. Due to low demand.

United 964
and
United 965
Lauched with IAD-PEK, capital to capital service.
Daily, then downgraded to 5 weekly, then 4 weekly.
Discontinued when oil ( and the ruble went south)
Used to be great fare for MR. Currently Aeroflot flies to IAD once a week, for diplomats.
TLV is an all out cash cow for UA, because EK,EY,QR does not participate in that market. The cargo $ is so lucratvive, the pax is just pure profit. When EK,EY,QR ( and its pax) can fly without hindrance to / from TLV, UA will be the first to object, LOUDLY.

For years. Id hoped UA would expand for IAD-JNB and/or EWR-JNB. Even to CPT, but I find that harder to imagine. SAAs current financial disaster means an oppprtunty for UA to JNB.
I also know SFO-BKK would be historic. Just seems so low yield.

I think something historical would be to bring back JFK or a 5th freedom route. Otherwise it might be SFO-India or EWR-Africa.

EWR-BKK, which is about 100 miles shorter than LAX-SIN. UA could do EWR-BKK-SFO as UA1, and UA2, SFO-BKK-EWR!

All this guessing games.
It probably is just something like DTW to PIA nonstop

My money is on JNB with 789 for a late 2019 start. Either EWR or IAD, maybe EWR marginally more likely. Both have 787 pilot domiciles, so ULH flying is possible.
In APAC, maybe BKK, but its hard for me to call that historic because UA was already in the market for a long time, and BKK-USA flights have been tried (and failed). I dont think ORD-SYD; IAH already is a stretch for the 789. Not sure if ICN would qualify as historic, nor would any of the unserved markets in South America. EWR-CAI could on the table, but is that significant enough to warrant a press event with Oscar? Im not sure. Certainly fits the bill as historic in one way.
Ill also go out on a limb and wonder if this is the new longhaul LAX route we heard rumblings about earlier in the year? If thats the case, then MAYBE LAX-BKK?
Im sure someone will leak it soon...

Now what kind of lunatic would do a route like that??
NZ just started ORD-AKL with a 787-9, which UA has, so I suppose its possible.

Sounds like multiple routes. Most mentioned here are interesting but not "historic." Only RTW would be historic.

No anagrams on Twitter this time?
If the announcement is in Chicago Id be looking at some love for ORD. Some of the ORD regulars have been felling a bit left out recently.
My guess:
ORD-DEL
ORD-BOM
ORD-TLV
EWR-BLR (or SFO-BLR reduced payload)

ORD is ripe for more of these long haul flights (SYD, TLV, etc.) but, for practical purposes, they require a 787 as it appears 777s are all committed. I don't believe UA has ever operated a 787 from ORD, though, and maybe that's why we haven't seen them.
